I have a sign for my window that says "Nothing in this house is worth your life", 7 swords (one an army medical blade actually used for amputations), 1 gun, a 60lb pull recurve bow and hunting arrows, a 150 lb Akita that is gentle until you piss Momma off, Armor glass windows and High Impact Glass patio doors, a steel front door and maybe 10$ in a jar. Cash is not kept in this house unless one of us just hasn't gotten to the bank or Master needs it for tolls on a job.

ATM and CC does it for us and we keep things within limits. However someone breaking in, is likely to be robbed by us [:D] I insist on being compensated for having to mop blood off the floor.

I lost my purse and had to cancel my ATM. I didnt know I would have it returned 3 days later. I still have no ATM. Do you know how hard it is to operate without it? I actually went to the grocery store and had to stick to a budgeted amount that I had in my wallet. Now I am down to about 4 dollars. i really hope i get my card in the mail soon!

I've been known to misplace my checkcard a time or two as well, which I usually didn't realize until I found myself digging around in my purse for a non-existent card while the cashier and other customers stared impatiently. [:)]

Answer to the OP - I don't keep cash at home, except for a small amount in my purse.

My grandfather was a bootlegger and a policy guy....when he passed away my father took the cash out in large trash bags. Old boy was scared of 2 things....Banks and the IRS....
Me, I rarely have any cash aside from the change I keep in the console of my car. My debit card rendered cash useless a long time ago!

popeye1250 -> RE: Do you keep a lot of cash at home? (12/1/2008 11:56:25 AM)

When I was 15 and 16 I worked in this Greek restaurant after school and on weekends.
The owner Charlie was a big Greek guy who always carried a horse roll around with him. And I don't mean a "guinea roll" either!
We'd cater club meetings at night during the week, Lions, Elks etc and sometimes Charlie would get into a dice game in the back of the kitchen with some of the guys in the Lions, Elks etc. "Bar-Boot" I think they called the game.
That's the first time I ever saw a $1,000 Bill!
One afternoon Charlie says to me; "Hey Kid, let's take a ride!"
He never once called me by my name, it was always, "Hey Kid!"
One of his restaurants was next to the Fire Station where my father was stationed and my father came home one night and told me I had a job.
We stopped off at his house for about five minutes, me in the car outside and he comes out and I asked him where we're going.
"To get a new car," says he.
Off we go to the Chevy dealer and they had a brandnew 1967 Chevy Impala there all ready for him.
I was in the showroom looking at the cars and I saw Charlie in the office counting out hundred dollar and twenty dollar bills on the manager's desk.
He signed the papers and we were off back to the restaurant in a new 1967 Chevy.
That's how guys did business in those days. Cash.

Popeye only a mick from bean-town could tell stories in such an entertaining and completely believable way...

DesFIP -> RE: Do you keep a lot of cash at home? (12/1/2008 12:14:04 PM)

I tend to take handfuls of coins out of my purse when it gets heavy. And never remember to roll them, just start a new jar. My son asked if he could have the coin jars. Figuring there were only a couple I said sure. Turns out there was over a hundred dollars in closer to a dozen jars!

Mike, that's cause they're all true.
After I quit the restaurant my friend got me a job at the other gunsel's store which was very close to my house.
He said, "don't work during the week."
"Sundays, that's the day you want!"
"That's the best day!"
Sure enough, it was!
And just like clockwork Dominick would come rolling in in his big white Cadillac wearing his signature black leather jacket flipping off the cops if they drove by and come in and ask, "what you you got in the 'till?"
To which I'd say, "not much, Mario was in about two hours ago!"
I'd hand him $30 or $40.
To which I'd add, "I think he said he was going to a different race track today."
To which Dominick would reply; "that son of a bitch!"
Once in a while either Dominick or Mario would tell me to "open the back room for so and so when he gets here."
So I knew a "load" was comming in, something "hot" which they'd ditch in the back storeroom which was much bigger than the one in the other store.
One time it was a load of shovels, you know, hand shovels. About 2,000 of them.
Mario goes in and says, "What the fuck am I supposed to do with shovels!"
"Maybe I can hand them out to all the Wops as they getta offa da boat!"
"Here's your shovel Cosmo, don't forget to pay your Union dues!"
They were there for a while.
But, sometimes they got in "good stuff" like t.v.s or stereos! Those were the best! And they went fast!
And lots of women's clothes for some reason, they must have had a source.
And Dominick and Mario wouldn't be asking, "what's in the till" for a week or so! During those times I made a lot of money.
But, I had a good gambit, I'd put aside $200 and when Mario would come in I'd give him $100 and tell him, "here's $100 that I hid for you so that Dominick wouldn't clip it on you."
He'd say, "Man, you're a good fuckin' kid!" "I fuckin' like you!"
And the same thing when Dominick came in! lol
I was clipping both of them and they loved me! lol
And their nephew Peter who we were in school with also worked at one of the stores but I doubt he knew me and my friend were clipping his uncles.
He was probably clipping them too!
It was funny picking up my check on thursdays for $14 when I had $100 at home that I'd clipped them for!
They had outragious prices so there was plenty of money to go around.
They'd stay open till midnight and this was before 7-11's.
Everyone was stealing from everyone!
When these guys would get a "load" in they'd be walking around with a couple thou in their pockets or ducked somewhere at home, they couldn't really put it in the bank!

Yes I keep cash in my home, usually a few hundred dollars and a stash of emergency cash as well.

popeye1250 -> RE: Do you keep a lot of cash at home? (12/1/2008 1:34:31 PM)

Mike, these guys were real fuckin' characters.
There was a picture of Dominick naked on top of a naked woman in coitus and he had his thick black-rimmed glasses on waving and smiling at the camera as he was boinking her.
It was pinned onto the bullitin board in the back office!

Popeye,

You have so many great stories!  You could entertain us around a fireplace in a pub for several nights.

I keep some change and cash around but not much.  My previous apartment was robbed and several things stolen a few years ago.

Cash? What's that?

I have surely missed seeing the kittin around.
Glad to see you posting, again.
meow!

popeye, I try to keep a small "emergency fund" at home.
My fund can range from $5 on up to maybe $1000, it goes
up and down, but there is almost always "something" in it.

Oh that sucks ..the magnetic stripe on mine died ..I just walked in the bank and they issued one right on the spot and had me go over to a machine to enter what PIN number I wanted.. so I had no waiting time.

tweedydaddy -> RE: Do you keep a lot of cash at home? (12/1/2008 4:51:40 PM)

My unruly offspring stole the cash I had for a new car, which I had put in a box in my bedroom while I was watching the prices go down. I found fifteen pounds left from twelve thousand. The bit that killed me was that he thought there was so much there that I wouldn't miss it!
He bought me the car from his University fund. I have no idea what he spent the money on, his room is full of expensive crap, it never occured to me to wonder where it came from.
It proved to me, once and for all, that I'm not my Dad, he would have hit me until I qualifed as soup. I kept my hands to myself and just took solace in spending his gap year money. he's got four years to make it up, or he works right through,
I've bought a safe. I never thought I'd need one, but with spawn like mine, I don't need burglars.

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Do you keep a lot of cash at home? (12/1/2008 5:00:27 PM)

I hate banks - which is why I keep a safe.  How much is In the safe at any given time?  Nobody's business but my own.

With all due respect that spawn of your ought to be taken to the back 40 and flogged tp hell and then a discussion about ownership needs to be had

... and not the Master Slave type either.

Personally if your paying for their college costs now might be the time stop it and recoop that money.
