Currently, we need infrastructure improvements. We have for a while. Fixing that is indeed new jobs, and government spending ALSO goes into GDP, as does the multiplier effects of the money those workers in turn spend. Consumers and businesses aren't spending, so giving them more money doesn't (in the short run) help much (as they are saving instead). I knew I could count on you to get the gist of my post all wrong, professor. I am definitely a fan of a New Deal type plan vs. that of something from the Chicago/ Austrian school for the situation at hand. My problem is with the potentiality of a morphed/mutated New Deal type plan where there’s mass privatization tactics utilized where it surrounds our infrastructure. And I make that assertion not based on any particular part of Obama’s track record - but instead , I base it on some of the economic advisers who surround him. Laurence Summers and Austen ''the ghoul'' Goolsby, specifically come to mind, as both are well known advocates of a particular type of International monetary fund ‘’shock therapy ‘’ which includes privatization, deregulation, low wage, wage gouging, union busting and race to the bottom economics. The delicate psyche of the American people is already in despair from their own acknowledgment that they will no longer be able to purchase new automobiles, jet skis ,atv’s , HD TV’s, Ipods, etc, all at once, at will. To further crush them with savage austerity via draconian IMF shock treatment is simply not right. If Barky can work similar type New Deal magic and put the middle class back in the win column, he’ll receive kind words and a thumbs up from me. If he instead bows to Wall Street/ The elites and comes up with some kind of Chicago school / Milton Friedman monkey business, he’ll be long gone by the end of four years. Anyways.......Happy Thanksgiving to All. - R
