Well Ray, they are paid to be pricks IMO.

Take the dick I spoke to at a certain debt collection agency that kept sending letters to my address for a young lady (my last tenant) who moved out six years ago. That they are now time barred to get their payment didnt worry them - they rely on the ignorance of people to a huge extent.

But his real dickheadery came when I tried to explain she'd long since gone; whilst its nice that he thought I was her on the phone, he firstly refused to countenance the notion that I wasnt this woman, and kept asking for my name - which I refused to give following a similar experience in the past whereby my name having been given the bills for that other tenant started arriving in my name. This is where its good in the UK if you know a little something - one letter from my legal services department (my holding company, which can be anything it wants to be) and that stopped pretty damned quick.

Then he insisted I pay her bill, to which I said something to the effect of WTF? "your address will be listed as the location of the bad debt and you will be affected too". I told him to go ahead and issue his court proceedings - which he did. Again, knowing a little something helps - two letters, one to his managing director and one to the managing director of the creditor company explaining the error and proposing legal action should my address be blacklisted over this, and it stopped abruptly. And yes, I let them spend their money on issuing court notices and all that before writing!

Funny you should mention someone else. I kept getting phone calls for another person form debt collectors. I answered it the other day and told them that the person does not live here and never has. Guess what the moron said. Since I answered the phone I must be that person. I called him a jackass and he had the dumbness to tell me to be careful that the call was being monitored. I wonder if he is still working there.

One way to determine if someone is really an attorney is to ask for their P# and the state(s) where they're licensed to practice.  You should be able to locate an online bar journal and look up the P#.  That will usually make them nervous, especially if they're lying.

Moonvine,  my suggestion is to contact the actual company, not the "collection agency".  Advise them that you don't appreciate the fact that they sent you to or made it appear that you're in a collection status.  Pay the bill and take your business elsewhere, if you can.  Btw, I'm not sure a bill for less than $50 or $100 will appear on your credit report.  If it does, dispute, dispute, dispute (that covered all 3 credit bureaus).  It's free!!

on a bill I didn't even know was owed (it is for a hosting provider).  Don't they have to provide me with a bill before they can send it to collections?  I expect I had an old email address on file with them, but they clearly have my snail mail address as they provided it to the collections agency!

I really don't want my credit ruined over $20, what do I do?

Write a check.
