moonvine -> I just got a collection notice... (11/24/2008 2:53:29 PM)

on a bill I didn't even know was owed (it is for a hosting provider).  Don't they have to provide me with a bill before they can send it to collections?  I expect I had an old email address on file with them, but they clearly have my snail mail address as they provided it to the collections agency!

I really don't want my credit ruined over $20, what do I do?

If its outstanding, pay the bill. [;)]

It's not going to ruin your credit.  I would still pay the puny amount and demand a receipt.

Cant' they still report it to the credit bureaus?  I want to make sure they don't before I pay it.

I *guess* it is outstanding.  I don't even know what it is for.  I suppose it is for registration of one of my domain names, but one would think they would send me a bill.

Actually it isn't even $20..it is $18.95.

DarkSteven -> RE: I just got a collection notice... (11/24/2008 3:11:43 PM)

Okay.  Do everything in writing going forward.

Start by writing them and saying "I dispute.  Please validate."  That should serve them notice that they are required to back up what they claim.

A lot of conning companies serve phony notices.  This may be one of them.

moonvine -> RE: I just got a collection notice... (11/24/2008 3:15:16 PM)

I will do that, but do have a business relationship with the company listed, so suspect it is legit.  Now, I looked at my mail again, and have one for $18.95 and one for 6.95...I really do not know what the 6.95 is for unless it is a charge for turning the 18.95 over to collections. I  have one domain name hosted with this company..which I will change as soon as I pay the bill.  Poor way to treat a customer in my opinion.

It's possible that they didn't specifically turn you over to a collection agency.  There are collection services that contact businesses and offer to audit their receivables or utility bills or what have you and collect payments or refunds for overpayments they've made.  They make their money by keeping a percentage of what they collect rather than charging the business for their services.  I imagine that as budgets get tighter, more businesses will take advantage of these services, and more folks will get collection demands for money they don't think they owe.

I'd contact the hosting provider and find out what the scoop is, then if I did owe the money I'd pay them directly rather than going through the collection service.  I don't think it makes any difference whether I pay the collection service or the hosting provider - either way it's going to be taken care of.  I just don't care for the collections services.

Hello moonvine,

I highly recommend having all contact with this company in writing and not over the phone.  When dealing with a situation that could potentially land in small claims court I send all correspondence by certified mail and pay the small fee to keep a record of your contact with them.  Make copies of any relevant documents and have a list of all persons you speak with, their phone numbers, titles and supervisors.  Play hard ball and show them you are serious.

pahunkboy -> RE: I just got a collection notice... (11/24/2008 4:57:50 PM)

dont worry about it.

no one is loaning money.   the dollar will soon be replaced.   throw it away and you are done.

I had a sim situation with godaddy.

here is what you worry about.

1. wage attachments.
2. asset attachments.
3. certified letters.
4.  demands to appear in court,

unless it is sent certified mail-- it is an iffy contact.   these places do what the heck they want.

if you were going for a mortgage- they would ask you to pay it and write a brief letter.

BTW- if you pay even a partial payment - that is essentially verifying the debt is yours.

UncleNasty -> RE: I just got a collection notice... (11/24/2008 5:02:58 PM)

DS is right. Do it all in writing. Dispute or it stands as admitted. Demand validation of the debt - and rsearch this so you know when they have done so and when they haven't.

Also read FDCPA. If they are yanking your chain you may have a suit against them in small claims.

This is the advice to follow here. I just had the same happen to me, except that I do not own any domains. I have disputed it, but not heard anything back from them and no email warnings about my credit.

That's an interesting bill pay method.

TheHeretic -> RE: I just got a collection notice... (11/24/2008 10:53:15 PM)

     Negotiate.  Get a supervisor on the phone.  Offer them $5 today to go away.  I had an old medical bill find me a few years ago.  They wanted over $1,000.  I did a check by phone for $200, and they cleared the debt.

When you have to come to collarme for a 'crisis' like this, where do you go when you have a real problem. ??

moonvine -> RE: I just got a collection notice... (11/24/2008 11:04:55 PM)

Didn't have to come to CollarMe - I chose to.  I figured that uninvolved people would have good advice.

If I have a crisis, it generally involves the cats, and I go to my best friend, or my vet, depending on what's appropriate.

My best friend, much as I love her, knows nada about keeping her credit rating good.  I would like to preserve mine as much as possible.

MarksFantasyGirl -> RE: I just got a collection notice... (11/24/2008 11:06:11 PM)

tell them that you can only afford $1 a month for the next 19 months.  If they refuse to take the payment and can't accept it, tell them that you consider it to be paid in full, and if they contact you again, you will be calling your lawyer...

Worked for my mom... She had a hospital bill that she couldn't pay.  So they set her up with payments.  She said that she could afford $10 a month.  They said that was fine... Then, one day, they sent her check back to her, and said that she they couldn't accept it.. they needed $20 every 2 months... she said You sent my check back.  So i'm paid up... But they kept harrassing her.  She told them that she had the cancelled check that they sent back, with thte letter, and if they didn't leave her alone, she was getting an attorny... never heard from that jerk ever again... :-D

moonvine -> RE: I just got a collection notice... (11/24/2008 11:23:25 PM)

Dnomyar -> RE: I just got a collection notice... (11/25/2008 4:46:25 AM)

I got a notice from a colection agency once. The guy was a total prick about working with me on the payments.  He told me he was a lawyer and that he wouild take me to court. I told him I was working for a law firm and to go ahead and do it. I told him I was going to send the payment to the company I owed the money to. You should have seen his attitude change. I don't believe that he was really a lawyer.
