My mom has made the decision to purchase some sort of a gaming system for my oldest son for Christmas, XBox, Wii, something.....most likely the Wii...

Id really like for him to be able to play it in his room, if he keeps it in the living room, his two baby brothers are going to be all over it, but I dont really have a spare TV right now to give him....is there any way possible to play any of these systems using a computer monitor instead of a TV screen?

ghita~

You could get a converter, but those are more expensive then just buying a cheapie tv.

Ghita you are looking divine, lovely new picture.
I very quickly did a search on the Wii and Xbox and found the following that might help
http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/GamesandMedia/SharingMedia/MediaCenter/ShareMediaFromMediaCenterPC.aspx
and for nintendo
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/online.jsp
there is lots of other info tho, on both sites which should give you an idea.
My (now grown up) boys have had problems only with the wii straps on the control box
the Xbox I would advise getting extended warranty on it, the eldest has had to return his twice in three years, but had no charge delivery, repair or pick up.very worth it.
hope this helps
Lucy

i noticed you are in the US

here is a wonderful site for you to try

www.freecycle.org

its an organization devoted to keeping the landfills as empty as possible by recycling items people no longer need.  each community has their own, so go to the site, then seach for your community.  they are not allowed to charge you for any items.  its strictly free... many times i see tv's and such offered for anyone who can get there to pick them up.  give it a try!

Wii is the best, but hard to get and needs another TV. I'd recommend a portable system, i think DS is the best, though i have a PSP too if u want to know about that. DS is kind of the precursor to Wii

First off, the Nintendo Wii is the most ingenious "toy" I've ever come across. Really it all comes down to age. Wii=good for all ages. 360 or ps3 for 14+(roughly, you know your kids better than I.). As for TV's I've seen some fairly big Televisions on sale for really cheap, of course they're essentially obsolete but still effective for your needs. (If you have a circuit city closing in your area, probably the best bet on console/tv)

My nephew who's family lives on the property behind uas has had a Wii for a while now, my son has gotten the chance to play it several times and I have only once. The boys all seem to love it, so hopefully we wont have any problems with it. My mom picked one up on sale for about $140 this week and its already in the closet waiting for Christmas. Thanks to Rachel's ingenious suggestion I found a nice 19" TV on Craigslist for only $30 and I spoke to the person selling it and it has all the needed hookups and Im picking it up tomorrow...YAY. So the rest of Christmas for the oldest son is probably going to be games and accessories for the Wii. He's only 8 and I love the amount of non-violent games that are available for the Wii. My other nephew had some sort of a nintendo years ago and I remember never being able to find anything we thought was appropriate.

Now...I just have to figure out what the heck to buy the toddlers.........aarrrghhh......whatever it is I can guarentee its probably going to be covered in Thomas the Tank Engine.

...i'd argue there is a big advantage to going down the PC route for gaming, as opposed to the consoles. To get the best out of any game you end up having to interact with the way a PC works. You don't just play out of the box. This knocks on to an increased knowledge base of how to get a PC to do anything......and in a world where knowing how to make a PC work is an increasingly valuable skill that's worth something........

I second the "put the WII in the livingroom" idea. Fun for the whole family. And if you are into humiliation play, you will have plenty of oportunity for that also, as your kids mop the floor with you. (is that a valid saying in the US too? )

Sucks? The Wii has easily outsold the PS3 and XBox360 combined and is still rarely on shelves.

I agree put it in the living room, the entire family will love it. There are games ranging from young to adult, fun for all ages.
