That'd be a good job for her as long as President Obama doesn't give her a checkbook to go giving away the Taxpayer's money to foreign countries.
Remember when her and Chelsea toured Africa when she was first lady?
She went around "pledging" Taxpayer dollars to those countries and Newt Gingrich said, "she can "pledge" whatever she wants to, it's the congress that holds the purse strings!"

My standing question is "why her?"

Hillary Clinton has proven herself an able and smart politician. There is no denying that. However, there is also no denying that Hillary's strong suit is NOT foreign policy. Her resume and political background are far more persuasive for either AG or Commerce, and possibly Homeland Security or HHS. Hillary as Secretary of State seems.....a reach.

Joe Biden, who without a doubt is as knowledgeable about foreign policy as any in Washington, has been relegated to the relative obscurity of the Vice Presidency, and Hillary, while she has done at least the first few levels of homework on topic, gets the starring role in foreign policy. As capable as Hillary is, putting her at State is not the way to build a team of "the best and the brightest," as it were.

Political leanings aside, I don't see how Hillary can be an asset to the incoming Administration by heading up the State Department. The person and the job are not a good fit.

MM, what do YOU think of this little news tidbit? How do you see HRC as Secretary of State?

I think he wanted her on the team instead of a critic of the team...The post had to be a high one otherwise why would she give up her senate seat. Remember she still has political ambitions on the Presidency and would not accept a lesser post because she would have a hard time running from Secretary of Agriculture or Commerce.

An interesting theory....one which suggests the presumed unity of the Democratic Party is not what many believe it to be.

Edited to add:
just to clarify, by AG I meant Attorney General.

I assumed  you meant Agriculture because with her past the Attorney General post would have been laughable.

I see it as both a domestic political move..."those inside the tent have to piss out" ...and she has credibility in other areas of the world. Who would have ever thought of Condy Rice as Secretary of State? She is one of the bright spots, if not the brightest spot in the Bush Administration and has developed a great deral of credibility. I think the rest of the world will see her as an extension of Bill (unfair, I know but the truth is rarely fair) and his popularity throughout the world is noteworthy.

Does this pay more than US Senator?

I'm wondering if she can get rid of the pantsuits?

cl,

She would not have been my choice.

In fairness, she is my senator, and she has done a GREAT job as Senator---we re-elected her in a landslide.

But just as people in Alaska are wondering what to do with Palin, we're wondering the same thing. Hard to believe she'd just go back to the grindstone, given her obvious ambition, and Sen. Schumer, also very popular and for good reason, FAR outranks her.

Obama's in a tough place. Can he trust her? After all, his organization is tight---her people presumably leaked the news (although trial balloons have been floated, so who knows...) I have trouble seeing her as the good soldier Colin Powell was. But he has to do something with her in practical political terms, and I also respect (even as I see it as risky) his apparent policy of building a team by melding rivals. Such a team could potentially be a wonderful think-tank and check on run-away thinking on power. Bush ignored those people. I hope Obama knows to listen (and I think he does).

I also think Sen. Clinton is brilliant, and is certainly capable both of taking on the job and adjusting to the political realities.

As you may well ask, I'd have appointed Bill Richardson. He'll be serving in another post, however.

But then, I haven't had a team of advisors working on this as I went about my day. Bottom line, Obama quite clearly is appointing a team of people (1) he thinks he can lead, (2) can get thing done (i.e., through Congress, etc.), (3) he respects (some have been with him for quite a while, including the campaign), and (4) can tell him things he may need to hear.

We'll all have to wait and see how it plays out, of course.

Thank you for asking, btw.

I'm not so sure Obama runs that tight of a ship. Unless of course you think Dubya leaked all the details of their talk.

I'm not so sure.  She's got considerable depth and experience as a corporate attorney--and besides trying and convicting terrorists, corporate legal issues are arguably the pre-eminent legal questions in this country.  Her passion is healthcare reform (she remains the biggest champion of nannycare in this country), and while her healthcare taskforce became a fiasco during Bill Clinton's first term, she does know healthcare regulatory issues inside and out.

The baggage she brings to any cabinet post is going to be the same:  Bill Clinton.

She wouldn't have been a "top cop" sort of AG, but her resume in legal matters is far from laughable.

I don't like her politics and I don't trust her at all, but there's no denying the woman has done a lot more than just be First Lady first of Arkansas then of the US.

Listening isn't enough.  Someone also has to referee the turf wars that break out in such a cabinet.  Lincoln did that.  FDR largely did that.  Bush failed to do that.

Travelgate and the involvement of the FBI and the subsequent fight between Hillary and the FBI would make it hard for her to be an effective AG. I’m not sure but I also seem to remember some shady dealings in real estate in Arkansas.

Her political enemies would be all over her.

I hope this happens.  I feel that it will.  I am very proud of her.   The only thing I had hoped was that she would be VP.  I believe her husband, Bill had to much baggage for her to carry that role effectively.
She will be one heck of a Secretary of State.
Aren't things changing nicely?

Hands the republicans a tissue
