lmao  Most of China doesnt have electricty let alone roads to drive them on.

RainydayNE -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/21/2008 10:48:58 AM)

who cares man? atleast they THOUGHT of something
we're still trying to figure out how to make gas cleaner to burn or cars that burn gas with more efficiency, meanwhile the rest of the world is trying to move past gas altogether.
and we wonder why american made cars aren't selling as well?

Musicmystery -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/21/2008 11:00:11 AM)

We have the Tesla, with a range of 244miles w/o charge, ready for mass production.

We should invest cash in that.

Until then, while we argue about what is socialist, the socialist Chinese will kick our butts.

***edited to add***

NPR's "Talk of the Nation" program's "Science Friday" is RIGHT NOW, 2 p.m. EST, discussing electric cars, including the Tesla.

[later, the show will be available too at www.npr.org]

The west's preoccupation with free markets will hasten the west's decline. The west's pre-eminence came about by the west controling the markets and not through free markets at all.

Capitalists can be the most stupid people on this planet because they refuse to accept their ideology is based on a mountain of falsehoods. Capitalists don't innovate, their raison d 'etre is making money out of money by investing in what is at hand and whether that is mud pies or whistling key rings, it makes no difference.

popeye1250 -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/21/2008 11:25:38 AM)

Good, let them keep it over there.

I agree.     only free if they want in.  but if they own the market no new comers welcome.   but too- I was told globalization is good for me.    so- since it is good... then kudos to China!!

A thought comes to mind regarding these electric cars...how does one recharge on a long road trip. Canada is just too big a place to be limited to 300km distance.

RainydayNE -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/21/2008 5:07:39 PM)

no doubt there will be charge stations
norway is increasing installation -

another article about it in seattle

Aneirin -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/21/2008 5:20:54 PM)

Hmm, does it need special plug in stations, or could it be charged from a normal plug socket ? The latter would be the break through of the year.

MarsBonfire -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/21/2008 7:27:56 PM)

Glad to see that China is taking the initiative to avoid falling into our self same trap of fossil fuels. By commiting to electric cars at the outset, they will be in a position to innovate, and dominate the coming changeover to plug-in tech for autos. Plus, they WON'T be adding as much to the problem of global warming.

Yes, as another poster noted, much of China is undeveloped, technologically. It also means that they have no infrastructure that they have to remain with, just for economic reasons. They are a clean slate,  able to draw on all of the latest technology at the start up. Add to this, their manufacturing prowess, and they will become a superpower in the economy of this century. ESPECIALLY if the US competition were to fade away because the leadership of our industries refused to read the writing on the wall where big, cushy gas guzzlers are concerned.

pahunkboy -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/21/2008 8:54:51 PM)

the electric company has been pushing time peak billing.  could it be they seen this comming?

I think part of it is China has a bunch of minerals that we dont, that are needed for the battery.

As to being backward- thats  not what I see in the cities there.  The sky scrapers make ours look poor.

this is a good time to mention - that nickel is such metal..  save your nickels they are worth more then quarter- if you go by metal value....   (2.5 cents )

Sure, Muse.  $100,000 sports cars are going to save the economy.  Got something that will take a 4x8 sheet of plywood?

RainydayNE -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/21/2008 9:39:23 PM)

i don't think he's talking about the car, per se
it hink he's talking about the technology IN it

i was listening to some guy on the radio the other day rambling about the VCR
and how we invented it over here but for specialised applications and it was a VERY expensive device
then the japanese said "hey, can we buy that from you?" and they had the vision to put one in every single home, which they did =p

the car may be expensive now but if you invest in it and work out the technology, you find ways to make it cheaper and next thing you know, EVERYBODY has one
ages ago i saw an ad for a computer that cost $10,000 dollars.
it could in no way shape or form keep up with one you can get for $695 today

BKSir -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/21/2008 9:55:30 PM)

Well, finally, one that gets a decent travel distance (I'd like to see it get a bit more still), and actually looks decent and like I might be able to fit into it without a bottle of lube and a shoe-horn.  And at a fairly good price (appx $22k, not bad really).  Just have to wait and see if the quality stands up.  Although, Warren Buffet did invest quite a nice chunk into the company, and he didn't get where he is now by being an idiot with no foresight into what would probably last and do well in the long run.  Yep, wait and see.  For now, it's gone onto my list of "Possible new cars to get."

And as far as "Oh, it's not american!  You evil socialist, terrorist, traitor."  Well, if the US companies would stop pumping out crap cars with crap efficiency, I would be glad to look into them.  Hm, wonder if this is part of the reason that they are in fiscal woes right now, while Toyota and Honda are showing higher than average net profit...  [8|]

When was the last time you saw some rice farmer wearing Nike trainers? I think they will be exporting, most likely.

LadyEllen -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/22/2008 7:14:13 AM)

Yep - and when theyve exported them everywhere, they can use the money to build roads (assuming they get paid for their exports) for locals to use.

although the way things are going, it might be better to use cheaper western labour to build them, and sell them in China.

This is always the problem at the end of the game of monopoly when too few have too much. Even billionaires can only buy so many electric cars for their own usage.

AMaster -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/22/2008 8:17:43 AM)

There have been a few electric cars produced here in the USA.  Right now most practical one is the ZAP.  It can be seen on http://www.zapworld.com/
It is not for everyone, but does meet the needs of some people.  It's a start.

Aneirin -> RE: China mass produces plug in car- (11/22/2008 8:20:48 AM)

Maybe that is it, that is why the west has a declining industry and the East has a burgeoning industry, we just talk and think about what should be, when the East hears our talk and acts on that talk.

Perhaps it is our industrial and economic decline is our own fault for sitting back on our laurels and not taking chances any more.
