Darias -> original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/19/2008 1:12:36 PM)

Philo mentioned how the trekkies thread had sidetracked into a general sci fi thread. and no one had mentioned this particular comparison

personally i feel this topic deserves its own thread rather than the distaste associated with hijacking another thread to discuss it

so

Original Galactica or the recent remake of the same name

super studd starbuck for the past or buxom blonde tomboy kara thrace of the present

the slightly less impulsive lee adama or the new stuck in the  mud lee?

the storm trouper type cylons or the ... shall we say vibrator shaped ones?

which tickles your fancy more? are you and old school Galactican who thinks the new show is pants?
or do you believe the reimagining of the classic has only improved the entire concept?

and just a thought to sidetrack my own thread from the begining.... is it me or has the remake been writtian by bible belters this last season?

Darias

I only caught some eps of the remake, because it was SO FREAKING DEPRESSING.  Thanks to Television Without Pity, I got recaps and deconstruction aplenty.

To me, the shows are so incredibly different, they aren't even comparable.  The new show is amazing, fabulous acting, deeply disturbing scripts, really annoying lighting.   It's a political soap opera with the trappings of a science fiction program, like Earth Final Conflict was.

Darias -> RE: original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/19/2008 1:54:05 PM)

there are a couple of themes apparent in both

starbuck stuck on a planet with a cylon

in the original starbuck befriends/enslaves/reprograms the cylon (cant remember which )

in the remake the cylon is an mecha-organic ship which the new improved bewbage possessing starbuck hotwires

The original was a camp piece of TV fluff that had state of the art SFX for its time and a decent story. The new version is closer to a Greek Tragedy in its maturity and willingness to deal with morally ambiguous decisions. The former was, essentially, a kids show. The latter dealt with issues like suicide bombings, the ethics of bio-warfare and the morality of torture.
The original has a soft spot in my heart...but the remake is something I'll watch over and over again. You probably could write a thesis on the former, but it'd be about pop-culture. A thesis written on the latter could go anywhere....in short, i think the latter is a triumph.

I really can't add anything to this commentary. Except: Kara Thrace? Buxom? [8D]

Indeed, BG:TOS is only slightly less campy than that Buck Rogers abomination. I couldn't watch that even as a kid, and I could never really get interested in BG at the time. BG:Redux has such incredible casting that it's difficult to imagine anyone else in those roles. Casting Baltar in particular must have been a challenge. An amoral genius who see-saws from supreme confidence to extreme ambivalence and self-doubt in the blink of an eye, with perhaps a bit of short-man syndrome thrown in the mix along with his sociopathy, and who hallucinates his superego in the form of Six (quite the form, too), well, that is some outstanding acting.

patwi -> RE: original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/19/2008 8:36:52 PM)

Oh...I adore the new series, beyond belief. The writing, the acting, all brilliant. I for one think the show was harshly snubbed by the emmys - who doesn't think Mary deserves recognition?

Like Lady H said, BSG 2.0 is just too damn depressing, not one episode has ended on an uplifting note.

Besides calling the new 'Buck buxom, is just wrong. She's a carpenter's dream, and butt ugly to boot.

...ah, bet you were a fan of Quantum Leap then........nothing challenging and a lesson learned every time......

patwi -> RE: original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/19/2008 8:41:54 PM)

Yeha...I really don't -need- Kara Thrace to be buxom. And you know...dramas are depressing sometimes. Thats the way it works.

patwi -> RE: original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/19/2008 8:42:59 PM)

Not to mention the music...that could use a whole thread of its own.

laura2161 -> RE: original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/20/2008 5:34:47 PM)

I'm a huge fan of BSG (And very disappointed this is going to be the last season) but I don't see a comparision between the two except for the name.

BSG of old was well let's face it, campy and quite foolish (remember the mechanical dog running around the ship?) Now with that being said,I was young and totally in love with Starbuck and watched it faithfully every week. Now as an adult I wouldnt be able to get through 15 minutes of it.

The 'remake' of BSG is astounding. The visuals, the scripts, even the sometimes too loud background music, everything is great. I didnt know if I could handle a female Starbuck but I realized 30 minutes into the first season that this was a brand new and improved BSG.

I could go on and on. Stopping now :-)

When i was a little kid the Cylons scared the shit out of me. Them and Maximillian (sp) from the cheesy Black Hole movie. [&:]

TexasFlyer -> RE: original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/21/2008 12:30:22 AM)

Definitely the new one. Absolutely brilliant writing and totally believeable story except for one gaping hole... The use of nuclear weapons. One would think that someone who has FTL (warp) travel would be well beyond simple fission... The new starbucks rocks, and the story is just amazing I cant wait to see how it turns out.

the mechanical dog was dagget... owned by a kid named boxy who incidentally is in the new one aswell

the new series gave a couple of nods to the original but mainly yes the storyline and design is quite different.

back in the day the camp scifi shows like BSG buck rodgers etc were popular as much for the camp as for the lasers

nowadays we are a much more critical audiance

in a way studios who tried to remake these old shows in the same image (see bionic woman ) have failed miserably... its only in cases like BSG where they take the idea and revamp it for a modern audiance that they get anywhere

does anyone remember the miniseries from orignal BSG where they made it to earth and sent super smart kids with a couple of viper pilots to check it out

wonder if the new series will do that

tweedydaddy -> RE: original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/21/2008 2:19:17 AM)

The new Battlestar Glactica is actually two remakes, one of Bg the other of a much earlier series called the Invaders, which saved money by using the same actors twice and the same sets most of the time.
Just wait till they make the usual screw up of having an episode where someone is in a coma/electrosleep/ life or death situation and the rest of the cast look soulfully on while the rest of the time is filled with clips until the miracle happens and they wake up in time for the credits, or is it me?

Darias -> RE: original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/21/2008 2:23:26 AM)

didnt they do that with the president that one time??

or when starbuck was missing

or adama was shot?

Yes, I vaguely remember that, where they had motorcycles with a pretty advanced drive system.

I used to like the old sci- fi serials, they were just entertainment, basic cowboys and indians in space, nothing threatening, just easy going, Buck Rogers, BSG etc. What is there now, what there is I see as pretty poor entertainment.

Like what happened to LEXX and  Farscape, or were they too much for tv, what with the rubber clad baddy in farscape.

MarsBonfire -> RE: original Battlestar Galactica Vs the Remake (11/21/2008 5:41:56 AM)

I pretty much agree with Philo's take on the show. I MUCH prefer the remake, mainly because the parts I like (the subversive comment on the Iraq war and the war on terror in general) make the new show relevant. The parts of the new show I DON'T like are those that it shares with the original. It's too bad the producers couldn't have just made it 100% original, and still manage to get an initial audiance equal to the one they got with the pre-existing fandom. But, with TV's cut-throat ratings game, if you don't come out strong in the first few episodes, you end up on the scrapheap. The reaction to the first TV movie was so strong, however, that they were stuck with keeping the name and the situation.

(Shrug) I still love the fact that the humans are the "third world nation" fighting against the cylons, who are apparently the analog for the US. Like I said, I think the show is probably the most subversive thing on TV these days. (and that's a compliment!)

no idea about lexx but farscape ended with erin and kriten having a baby... and reviving some long lost alien species who brought  peace to  the galaxy... or something

The show was called Galatica 1980 and was horrible. MyYearbook.com (lame myspace wannabe website) actually has full episodes you can watch linked to their site
