Democrat or Republican it's good to see a crook go down!
I am still amazed that it was so close after the Senator was convicted. Perhaps it is a "only in Alaska" occurance?
Would any other convicted felon come so close to winning a senate sit?(I can hear the "they are all crooks" opinions coming)
Worse than that it still might not be over! There is without doubt a recount in the offing....Let's hope the original count holds!

Ted Kennedy never lost his seat after he caused Mary Jo Kopetne's death by negligence.

A convicted felon may stand and be elected to the Senate?

He was not convicted of a felony.

Yep.  The other Senators can vote to expel the felon, but that's not a given.

I'm pretty sure a conviction here means you cant stand for anything but an ovation.

You're right. he wasn't. Kind of makes you wonder. Doesn't it?

No.  Back when this happened, being drunk was almost a mitigating factor rather than an aggravating factor in such cases.

And...I don't think a grand jury was ever formed either. Plus, the repubs never go after Mass., not worth it as they will vote blue anyway.

A judge can be convicted of a crime and still remain on the bench by law...and collect his salary. He still would have to be impeached.

Yes, I am pretty sure a senator or congressman can run for, be elected to and hold office even after a feloneous conviction, collect his salary and take his seat unless voted out by the group.

We have had convicted judges and politicians sitting in jail still collecting salaries still 'in office' unless a vote is taken to remove.

Stevens could have won, come to Wash. and been seated by the repubs even though that wouldn't look too good.

Nope, no recount unless Stevens pays for it.  The gap has to be < 0.5%..or in this case 1600 votes.  Begich won by over 3500.

Plus Stevens knows he'd be expelled from the Senate anyway so even if the recount were in his favor (unlikely), his success would be short-lived.

Federal sentencing for his felony convictions is on Feb. 25.

Refresh my memory.  What was he convicted of again?  And what was he charged with?

Rule the answer to both questions.. is of course nothing....though I doubt that helped Mary jo's family much.

And the House.  The follwing is from Wikipedia regarding Ohio Congressman James Traficant:

In 2002, Traficant was indicted on federal corruption charges for taking campaign funds for personal use. Again, he opted to represent himself, insisting that the trial was part of a vendetta against him dating to his 1983 trial. On April 15, he was convicted of 10 felony counts including bribery, racketeering, and tax evasion. The House Ethics Committee recommended that he be expelled from the House, and on July 24 the House voted 420-1 to expel him. Gary Condit was the lone "no" vote and there were nine members who voted "present." Traficant was the first representative to be expelled since Michael Myers's expulsion in 1980 as a result of the Abscam scandal.
After his expulsion, Traficant ran as an independent candidate for another term in the House while incarcerated in a federal prison in White Deer, Pennsylvania. He received 15 percent of the vote (27,487 votes) and became one of only a handful of individuals in the history of the United States to run for a federal office from prison. The election was won by one of his former aides, Tim Ryan.

I'm pretty sure that Stevens does not know this.  I think that he's pretty sure that he will be acquitted on appeal.  He may very well be right about this.  Appellate courts are frequently more sympathetic toward and lenient with the rich and powerful than are juries.  The jurors in his case are saying that it wasn't a done deal until Stevens took the stand - that he pretty completely torpedoed the image his attorneys were creating of a grandfatherly fellow who just didn't know what was going on.  If his attorneys can restrain him (or muzzle him) and no more skeletons or smoking guns show up, I wouldn't be all that surprised to see his conviction overturned.  I'd be pretty disgusted, though.

I suppose he could try to get a pardon before Jan 20, but I think that would be kind of out of character.  If he did that, he'd still be a convicted felon and I don't think that would sit well with him.  If he has a couple of appeals fail before that it might be different, but I just can't see him taking that route.

I have mixed feelings about it, and I was mistaken.  He did plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.

I'm tired of hearing it brought up, though, as a lame justification every time a Republican gets in trouble.

"Well he may have done wrong but it's nowhere near as bad as what Ted Kennedy did".

Ultimately, the man was charged with a misdemeanor.  Whether he should have been charged with more is arguable, but it is not an apt analogy to someone who has been convicted of multiple felony crimes.

IN MY OPINION he should have been charged with much more which bolsters my point that I made in my second post (Makes you wonder. Doesn't it?).

Thank you for taking the time to look it up (as I refuse to do peoples' research for them). No matter how anyone wants to spin it, a young lady died who quite possibly would not have died had Senator Kennedy not been busy worrying about C.H.O.A.
