thanks again everyone for your help and sharing.  Jester "huggs Ya" can't wait to see You and lilly again!

i did the MRI without the piercing.  i asked the girl about it anyway, and she said since i couldn't definitively tell her the type of metal it was, she would have had me remove it.  i'm gonna try to have the jewelry put back in tonight .... wish me luck!

My labial piercings went 7 years (after 4 yrs of constant jewelry) without closing. I removed my rings (4 of them) after 9/11 so I wouldnt have to explain to my boss why I set off the metal detectors when we were traveling. When I visited the piercing studio in June of this year, I was prepared for re-piercing. A taper was used to re-open the piercings and I was back in business !

Note: I hate captive bead rings because my nails are long and I can never get those stupid lil balls back on. I switched to circular barbells.

i had 12 labia piercings and one hood piercing..each time i walked through the metal detectors at the airport it was like a crapshoot for setting the alarm off due to the level of detection set at the various airports as some of the detection levels were increased and made for longer times getting through security.  i finally had to remove my piercings after being told that i may be required to leave the immediate area, remove all my piercings, and would only be allowed to pass the security gate if i could show i had removed my piercings.   That day i did end up flying with all my piercings entact but had them removed shortly afterwards.

i was so very disappointed to have them removed as i was so very proud of myself for getting 13 piercings at one sitting and just reading your post about the tapers has really excited me because now i have hope of having them replaced without repiercing.

i had my tongue pierced for the first time in 2001 and took it off after a year and a half. i just got it re peirced and since i once was pierced the piercer had to stretch my hole with a little stick to put my barbel in again.

For my eyebrow the piercer was able to just pierce it again without having to stretch my hole. ( i both took those piercing away for the job i had couple of years ago )

And recently i had a ''monroe'' piercing ( wich is located a bit higher then  the upper lip ) apparently i am allergic to the plastic they use for those new barbel. i had a swollen lip so i had to take it off. and in about 2 days the hole was closed.

There is one thing i learned with those piercing and few others i had or still have ( nose, nipple ) .... never wait too long before putting back a jewellery, some type of piercing can close in a matter of hours or days and having them  stretched is not a good feeling

I used to have a lot of piercings but removed them all but I remember my piercings would close pretty fast.Buy multiple replacement balls from your piercer next time you see them and  I would not put anything that is not sterile on a fresh piercing..especially the labia...call your piercer for advice to get by till you can get to them.In regards to your MRI ,appropriate body jewelry is non-magnetic, and it does not need to be removed for MRI procedures unless it is located in the region being examined..

You can used waxed dental floss to hold things open (and not worry about the MRI) until you can replace the bar. Just fold it over a few times, thread it through, leave a bit of loop, tie it off and you're good to go.

I'm not a medical/diagnostic technician but my take on it is this:
body jewelry = metal (the scientists can split hairs over the materials and make-up)
MRI =  really BIG magnet
potential outcome = ouch?

Not all metal is magnetic. Quality body jewelry isn't. Try it with a refrigerator magnet (yeah, I know, MRIs are much stronger, but this makes the point). Unless the jewelry is in the affected area, she shouldn't even need to take it out.

From: http://www.safepiercing.org/troubleshooting.html

Jewelry: Xrays, MRIs, and CT Scans
• Metal body jewelry will result in an opaque density on x-rays, but will not otherwise affect visibility on film
• Nipple piercings are unlikely to obstruct visibility of any pathology on thoracic x-rays if both frontal and lateral views are taken
• Appropriate body jewelry is non-magnetic, and as such does not need to be removed for MRI procedures* unless it is located in the region being examined
• Gold jewelry is much more thermal-conductive than steel
• There is no need to cut body jewelry for removal – see Jewelry Removal Tips
• Even momentary removal of jewelry from a healing piercing can result in amazingly rapid closure of the piercing, and make reinsertion difficult or impossible

From http://www.safepiercing.org/troubleshooting.html:

Jewelry: Materials
• Acceptable materials for wear in body piercings include:
  • High quality surgical implant grade stainless steel (specifically 316LVM ASTM F-138)
  • Niobium
  • Titanium (specifically Ti6A4V ELI, ASTM F-136)
  • Solid 14k or 18k white or yellow gold
  • Solid platinum
  • Dense, low-porosity plastic such as Tygon or PTFE
• Appropriate jewelry has no nicks, scratches, burrs or irregular surfaces that might endanger the tissue
• Safety pins and other household objects are never put into piercings by professional body piercers
• Some piercers use inferior jewelry that contains too much nickel or other irritating alloy resulting in a “metal allergy” (see Allergic Reactions)
• Sutures are not an appropriate size or material for wear in body piercings

It's a good idea to invest in a set of tapers (or maybe just one for the size of your piercing) and a few retainers for when you need to go through X-rays and scans...  There is a new(ish) Teflon-based product (PTFE) on the market that is excellent for this purpose. PLUS it can be sterilized in an autoclave for initial piercings.  I plan to get a few of those barbells for myself, as I have no intention of retiring my piercings anytime soon!

The only time, i ever had to remove my jewellry was when i had to have surgery, apparently in the hospital i was treated (in the UK), they said it was standard i had to remove them when going for any operations, one of the reasons being, if anything happened while having surgery, if they needed to use other treatment to resuscitate, the equipment used can burn the body, ( something to do with electrical currents going through the body ) etc.

I had my nose and navel pierved twice because they closed up the first time. I did the nostril piercing myself!. Now I want to have  a vertical hood piercing. What kind of post or ring is best for a vhp?

Jester, your docs are a lot more generous than ours down here. They forced my daughter (who had already been assaulted) to remove her pinna piercings when they brought her to the ER, even though they weren't anywhere near where she'd been stabbed, and they -always- make me take my piercings out, even when I'm in for something that has nothing to do with the piercings or the area around them.

I kept a steady supply of plastic spacers (because I tend to be in and out of the hospital) for many years, until I took a job that required that I remove all my piercings anyway. (5 more years and then I can get my piercings back!!!!)

For MRI's:  Always take out body jewelry.  Always, always, always.  SadysticJester, it's quite possible that you're jewelry didn't have a high enough metal concentration, or maybe it was done in a different location, or you might even be thinking of the wrong procedure (you wouldn't believe how often this happens...) but like someone else said, it's a giant magnet.  Ask an ER nurse sometimes about guys who've forgotten about their 'down south' piercings.

I always remember, cause I was waiting to get one done when I was 17 and heard it being pulled out.  After hearing that I can't even leave plastic jewelry in >.>
