I'm reading it now, and I am finding the same things you did. I didn't know there was a movie coming out, now that I do I am kind of excited.

I did a day call on Watchmen, and I just have to say, from what I saw, it's going to be fantastic :)

isnt this just an attempt to jump on the * comic book movie franchise * bandwagon ?

i mean after the scores of comic books from marvel and DC comics made into movies , making millions , spawning spin off TV shows and lunch boxes , most of the more mainstream comic book licenses have to cost a fortune ... so Hollywood grabs the smaller more cultish comics and starts making them ...

I have read the watchmen comics ... wasnt a huge fan .. not sure how it will fair as a movie ... but like V and Aeon Flux Etc ... ill probably go pay my 8.50 to see how they do ...

little known fact ... before hugh jackman, patrick stewards X-men there was a little known made for TV variation on the x-men universe called generation X based on a spin off comic of the same name ... even had jubilee in it ...

lesser known fact ... Made for TV movies also spawned a badly made bloodrayne movie adaptation .. based on a computer game from back in the ummmm 90`s i think ...

proof that Studios will make just about anything even badly in order to get on the boat

Actually they've been trying to make Watchmen since the 80s but just recently had the technology available that they thought they could do it justice. Also, made for TV movies had nothing to do with Bloodrayne, and everything to do with Uwe Boll. It wasn't a studio film, it was made with funding through the now defunct german tax shelters laws. He's also the guy who made Alone in the Dark and Postal. Basically he shouldn't make movies.

* bows down in the presence of a superior nerd *

* Grins *

I have noticed some of his movies lack .... substance ... or need substances to  enjoy ... not sure which .... i was a big fan of the games ... the dialog and storyline was a nice take on vampires for me at the time ... i originally watched the first one  and hated it even though ... Michelle Rodriguez ... yum !!! and watched the second in the hopes that some effort had been made to fix the issues of the last one ... no joy ...

i honestly had not heard about a watchmen movie untill this thread ...  its the kind of obscure information i pick up from some board or other... i hope they put a decent effort into it .. not just in the effects they were waiting for but in the story as well ... so many adaptations that could have been great are a kalidescope of effects with little or no substance when it comes to charactors and storyline ... which after all is why most thinking mamals watch movies in the first place

The people I know who were on the regular crew (instead of lowly day callers like myself) are more excited about the film than anyone else I know, and most of them are giant comic book nerds, so I have a feeling it's going to be pretty damn good

ahhh but even i know a great film can be destroyed by whats left behind on the cutting room floor ... time will tell

Not being a comic-book nerd, I can't say I'm waiting with baited breath (never even heard of this one), but I do enoy the highly stylized films with intriguing stories that come out of the graphic novel genre.

.....ah, Watchmen is the daddy. Arguably the first of the Western adult graphic novels that didn't involve remaking characters. Deep, dark and intriguing. The basic McGuffin is that costumed heroes were banned by government and the story in Watchmen catches up with some of these heroes a few years later. NiteOwl, for instance, is now a rather paunchy middle aged man (with a bat cave full of kit).
But the icing on the cake is Rorsharch. A borderline psychotic costumed hero, uncompromising and driven. He's what a right wing militia member would be if they were a superhero. Arguably the most interesting superhero ever written, in my view.
i'd heartily recommend getting the graphic novel to anyone interested in story-telling.

MadAxeman -> RE: Sod Potter, Watch this...... (11/16/2008 1:08:51 PM)

Sod Potter is the elder brother of Harry nobody mentions. His activities have been expunged from the books since the author was threatened with legal action from the vice squad.

Never heard of it before...can't be that big-name now can it

...sometimes its the pioneers that are missed and the imitators that are remembered. Do yourself a favour, buy or borrow a copy of the graphic novel. i promise you wont be disappointed.
