Stupid questions but curious - 11/14/2008 5:06:47 PM

Lately, I been seeing posts that are dated back, sometimes even to the year of 2005. Though they threw me at first, I was able to catch on fast. My question is what happens to some of these people who would post? Did they change their names, or just disappeared?

Another stupid question, why do people bring back a post from the past, instead of restarting one? Just plain curious type of person. Have cat in me:) This is not written to offend anyone, just curious.

Some just fall of the face of the earth.  Some have changed names since then.

Some people add something to the post, as opposed to starting a new one on the same topic, partially because theres a chance that that topic is one that is talked about ever 2.5 pages in the forums.  Other times, its such a good topic that to start a new one would take away from all the good info already listed in it.

My about it anyways...

I've gone through some old posts, felt they had an interesting premise and good comments attached and 'revived' them via making a more recent post.  If the initial premise is good, there's pre-existing feedback that also has substance, I figure that is better than starting anew; more grist for the mill, more context, all that good stuff.

Mostly they disappear.  A chunk will change names (I used to be EmeraldSlave2).  The re-upping of threads could be for a variety of reasons- they likely clicked on a newly provided link and didn't notice the dates, or someone comes back from the past and wants to add new thoughts, or they just want to get fresher ideas on an old topic so they don't start a new one (which I like, but the mods tend not to)

I was wondering the same thing recently, I saw a link to an old post in another post and reading through it (all 33 pages!) I saw so many different posters, often with high post counts, most I havent come across before. I did see a few familiar faces though!

Yes, I thought you might have been EmeraldSlave2.

Thanks everyone. My curiosity has been fed.

I'll start a new thread if I think bringing one back from two or three years ago is ridiculous, because I wanted the people here and now, their opinions, not inactive members from years ago.  Sometimes the old threads are similar, but not quite in the same vein.  Case in point was a thread I started about first time BDSM event experience. Hearing from current members was more interesting to me than what 50 dead profiles had to say 3 years ago, and with many newer members, there also was enlightenment on not only their more recent accounts, but also of more recent events.  Even if something from before was pertinent, it's not like I can ask someone no longer active a question about something I found of interest in their post.

It's because LA provided a great list of links from old posts, and people add their thoughts to those older posts.

Seriously, though, that's a great service.  I love it when she does that.  But I am willing to bet that the folk that we point to the Search feature obediently do so, and resurrect old threads.  OR the new thread is posted, to get a fresh viewpoint on the subject at hand.

Lots of folks have joined CM since 2005, and likely as many have left.  That's almost 4 years, oceanwynds.  According to the TOS and the guidelines, a CM member is supposed to check the archives before posting a new OP.  I suppose if their question hasn't been fully addressed, they're supposed to 'bump' the old thread.

Confusingly, 'bumping' is also supposedly strictly controlled, though I've never heard of anyone getting into trouble with the Mods for doing it.

Me, I just write whatever I wish.  I don't have enough time to research *key words* to see if a discusion in the archives might be relevant.  I doubt many folks do.

Anyone happen to know how far back in time the archives actually go?

Seems like if they go all the way back to the inception of CM itself, it must be tying up a great deal of bandwidth.  I've only ever been able to pull up 100 posts under my own nick.

Just curious.

there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers :P

-why no new threads but reviving an old one.
Some people complain about the same threads over and over...so better ad to an old one. No need to repeat old stuff what is said already could be a point also.

-where did they go
Sometimes people split when having a couples profile, some got tired of others and changed name or left, got married...left the lifestyle...got ill...died.
Or started again...to leave the past...that is why I changed my name. I like fresh starts once in a while.

That happens here a lot as well making some afraid to start a new post so they do the search and add a comment or want more info a ask in that post

Hello ocean.  Some just do not come here anymore.  A couple of people still hang in the profile side and mail now and then.  Some post one or two a year.  Some people name change due to so many reasons.
Darcy and I had seperate profiles before - Darcyinshadows and darkinshadows - so we are pretty much the same names.  I have been here far too long... yikes.  I like looking at the way I have evolved over the postings actually.  It's cool to see how people change over time etc and to see how answers have changed over the years.

I am not sure why people bring back posts.  Maybe they just use the search feature and not realise the date on them.  I don't find there anything wrong with doing that, unless they are answering a personal question rather than general one - simply because the persons no longer around anymore or the issue was over so long ago.

Threads usually get necromanced because someone was studying that topic and pulled it up in a search.  They didn’t have a post in mind when they started, they were just studying.  They added to the original because something in it inspired their reply.

As a mod in a different community, I observed a pattern of questions and started a few “official” threads and published “guides” on those topics.  Talk about necro, some of those threads are over 3 years old and still going strong with over 100,000 views and over a 1,000 replies.  I also posted a ‘sticky’ FAQ thread with links to the best threads on popular topics in each forum category and users made suggestions in the FAQ thread.  The forum software was set up different and we never lost the ability to edit so I could always add users' suggestions to the OP.

I would love to see the mods here put a 'best threads' or FAQ sticky in the forums for us.

Necromancer....the name of a horse in my favorite book....

on topic...
i think a best threads or FAQ would help a lot with not hurting the new members feelings when they post something that annoys the veterans to the point of snarking...i like this board, but it took a long time for me to get over the initial welcoming baptism by fire we all apparently go thru on the first several posts. im not on any other forum that is as active as this one and with as many really interesting people as are here...so i stay and i learn and i play. But i would have done well to review things prior to jumping in in the beginning.

Thanks everyone for posting. I can see how people can be leary of posting something that has been addressed a hundred times. Fortunately, for me I never had anyone send me to the fire, and would like to keep it that way. Hmm on second thought, I love fire:)

Where did they go? Out picking flowers and making daisy chains probably..

Seriously, some lose interest, some leave for a time due to work and family, some get disolusioned with things here and apparent injusticies, some (like me) take a break for a month, year or two due to burn out and some just find a forum better suited to their needs. I know a number who are unlikely to post here again but who keep a profile acxtive on the other side.

Yep. if you use the search feature, and post to that thread, you will get 30 people saying, 'why are you posting on an old, dead thread?' it's a no win.

I think people just search for a topic and don't notice the date. I changed my name when cme had a glitch and prevented me from posting under that nick.
