careful careful when lasering with the kitties, be very careful to keep them away from their eyes.

I used to use a laser to wind down my yorkie. She was a puppy that never grew up, a tad less than 2 lb when I got her, 2.5 was the most she ever weighed and always kept the puppieness in her.  She would always try and eat the carpet just in case the red dot was under it.

just beware of doing what I call the 'kitteh wind up'... when ya get a cat spinning in circles chasing the dot.. I did that to one of my cats,once..poor thing got so dizzy that he fell over..

I STILL feel bad....

You're a better person than I am. One of ours is easy prey for that trick with the "kitty fishing rod", and I find it absolutely hilarious

I won't tell you what "Love" and I used to do to our cat....

But The Lazers are freaking AWESOME if you start it when they are younger... Gibson (my stepdad's 13 year old Himalayian) Will not even THINK about the lazer.... Damn cat... And I had a dog that  I think might have been like seriously blind or something... he wouldn't even chase it or look at it....

Ever put highlighter on a cats nose, turn out all the lights, and turn on the blacklights?  The dot is there when they look at the light... when they look away, It's not.... Keeps them entertained for HOURS!! and your arm doesn't get tired... lol

meanwhile, I sit there thinking "ya goof, they arent MOVING!"  lol

My Siamese knows where the light comes from and tries to get it out of my hand. All the other kittehs just chase the dot. Up the wall, onto each other, under the dog's tail, around in circles, back and forth to spectacular 180-degree leaps...

I rationalize my giggling at them with the knowledge that they are getting the only aerobic exercise they will get, being indoor beasties.

Marvellous - theyre all tuckered out! If its possible to work cats like dogs, I've done it!

E

Every night before my bedtime, kitty starts excitedly jumping around, waiting for the little red dot to show up (I tire him out before I go to bed so I can get some sleep!). Every night he runs the course - from hallway, into the living room, around the coffee table, between the recliner and end table, back through the hallway, into the bedroom, up on the bed, down from the bed, back to the hallway into the livingroom...and repeat. He runs until he collapses, and pants like a dog with his tongue hanging out of his mouth (literally!). It's hilarious to watch and is a perfect way of tiring him out. He knows when I'm about to do it, and as soon as I pick it up, it's like Snoopy before suppertime. :)

am I stressing them out or are they having a great time chasing the dot?

That's exactly my question, which is why I am not a fan of them (sorry to be boring about that one). Am sure my gang of 3 cats would like to chase them (at least by two of them I am sure) but I would feel too  sorry for them to fool them around. My girl already gets annoyed when she has to keep searching her treats (i always throw them up the book shelf so she has to search it as it doesnt necessarily just land up there) as without hiding it for her the two boys have less chances of eating their treats in peace (so I need to keep her occupied as she is incredible greedy).

and thanks for the tip greedy, nope, I dont want to make them dizzy...

As far as stressing them out.....I don't think it does, really....if cats don't want to do something, they aren't going too.......two of my three will chase the dot til they finally plop down and go promptly to sleep....Boo, on the other hand, just watches the other two goofs run after it.  I swear, I've seen him actually roll his eyes at them!  Cats need stimulation and exercise just like the rest of us.

KB has figured out where the dot comes from too.....occasionally, he'll try to take it, even from the counter...not sure what he thinks he's gonna do with it, but given time, he just might figure out a way to make it work!

Cats are predators by nature. It seems to be universal, from lions to cheetahs to housecats, that their nature is to sleep for 80% of the day, and spend the other 20% ripping shit up with great ferocity. Having four cats at the moment, and as many as eight at one time, I sincerely think that they are very capable of being bored, and having something to chase from time to time is actually a good thing for them. Especially if you give them treats at the end (only thing I could think of to keep the poor kitteh from looking for the dot after I turned it off)- then they've effectively captured and devoured their prey, done their job as carnivores, and have earned a good nap.

Gibson's favorite toy is an old bootlace... it has a few nots in it and stuff... If you tease him with it a little bit, then just lay it infront of him, and pull it slowly across the room, he will wiggle his cute butt, and POUNCE! He loves it... and when he's done, he stops.. plain and simple... No distress... and I think it's the same thing with the lazers... when they don't wanna play anymore, that's when they collapse... ::shrug::

I'm going to try the same thing with Sweets and a hunny bun on a string! HAHAHA!
