Since I've moved to my new place, I haven't been sleeping that well.

I end up falling asleep around 3 or 4am (sometimes even earlier) and I'm expected to be up by 8 (luckily, expected isnt the same as required... and it's not enforced).

I'm not the kind of person who functions well on 4 or 5 hours sleep.

Right now, the issue is that I have a cold, so the runny nose, and cough are keeping me up. Prior to that, I still hadn't been sleeping on the right schedule.

I had strep throat in the beginning of October, and that screwed everything up.  I lost my job as a result of being out sick, so I then had plenty of time to rest to get better.  I think I'm still sleeping on that schedule.  Going to bed whenever I finally got tired, because I didn't wake up until 12 or 1 in the afternoon.

I am trying sleeping pills, but I took one about 4 hours ago, and have only felt a little bit of brief tiredness.

I think part of it is the move.
This is the first place I've ever lived where they've talked about break-ins.

I guess if we're gonna get broken into, it's gonna happen whether I'm asleep, or awake, so maybe that shouldn't be so heavily on my mind.  I'd rather get broken into when I'm alert enough to at least call the cops, as opposed to laying in bed, asleep.

Another part of it is my leg cramps.
They're vicious.  It hurts so much that it wakes me up.  Last night, I finally fell asleep at 3am and I was woken up at 5:30 with cramps that I couldn't get to go away.

I think that I'm going to have to pull an all-nighter, to be able to get back on the right schedule... maybe by the time I've been up for a full 24 hours, I'll be sleepy enough to go to bed at a reasonable time.

That still doesn't solve the leg cramps, though.  Someone said sleep with a bar of soap in a sock next to your leg and it will go away.  I don't see any reason why that would even possibly work, and I never use bar soap, so I don't have any around to try it.  Is there any validity to that remedy?

For now, I just take my pain meds and my sleeping pills and hope for some rest at some point.

Does anyone else have any advice?

What pain meds and what sleeping pills? How many and for how long?

The symptoms you describe sound like those of someone who has developed tolerance to the dosage of certain pain meds and maybe certain sleeping pills.

I advise you to see a doctor, what the hell do we know about your medical history?

I had NEVER taken anything previously for sleep, and took my first two sleeping pills about three nights ago...

the box says take 2, so i did as it said.

my pain meds are for my injured knee (tramadol) given to me by the doctor, but my insurance went away when i turned 22 a few days ago, so i can't ask him about my leg cramps.  i take the dosage that's written on the bottle, and it works, when i take it, but i don't WANT to take it because i'd like to find a different way to cope with it so i don't become dependant on it.

so i'm not some pill junkie, or whatever... i actually asked the questions to prevent from having to take the meds all the time, by finding some other solutions.

Satrsnymph, one of my girlfriends moved from Manhattan, NYC, NY to Cincinncati, OH.  The culture shock of not hearing the noise of NYC at night affected her sleep badly.

If you have not had sleeping problems in the past, look at the 'net about 'sleep hygiene'.  It's a body of work by various medical practioners, etc. as to such things as keeping a routine, meditating etc.

I have no idea whether you've moved to a 'bad neighborhood'.  Lots of folks here in the U.S. (and likely elsewhere) are just anxious because they don't know what will happen to our economy.

IMO, every man and woman needs to be able to protect themselves.  Most of us do it by living in nice neighborhoods, but I think no matter where you live, a woman cannot afford to assume she's safe.

This is what I think I'm going to do.  I want a little switchblade to carry in my purse. I want a spy cam so I can see who's at my door before I open it; an intercom would be nice to have as well.

Talk to your Dom about personal safety.  You are probably just going through an adjustment, but it never hurts to learn how to defend yourself.

I reccomend reading The Gift of Fear, by Gavin De Becker.  I found it intuitively correct about the differnce between actual danger and anxiety or worry.  Threat assessment is tough for some folks.

I wish you well in your new home.

Leg cramping can be caused by a lack of potassium. Bananas have lots of that, so ear a couple a day for a little while. The soap won't help at all.

Pulling an all-nighter to get back on schedule will help. The best thing for the body is being on a set schedule for sleep, going to bed and getting up at about the same time every day. While you are staying up, put clean sheets on the bed. There is something soothing about slipping into a bed made with fresh, crisp sheets. Pamper yourself!

Before bed, do something relaxing -- a hot bath, meditation, reading (though try not to chose something that will keep you awake because you want to finish it). Whatever you do, don't take more of the sleeping pills than the bottle says to. Establish a routine for yourself that you will do before bed. This prepares your body and mind for sleep, gives the brain a cue that, yes it is time to rest.

Look in a health food store for Melatonin. It is something that you can't get hooked on because it is a substance that naturally occurs in the body, and it will help you sleep. i've used it before. A cup of herbal tea or other hot non-caffeinated drink will help.

A good orgasm is also a great way to relax for rest. The endorphins that flood the body afterward will make you sleepy -- at least id does me.

As you can tell, i have had some experience with insomnia in my life. Most recently, and more difficult to solve, is waking up at 3 am and not being able to get back to sleep!

Hope you get some sleep!

g

I have no magic cures for insomnia, which I suffer from on and off. For the leg cramps, try the homoepathic offered by Hylands. It has quinine in it and I know a couple of other people that swear by it also. I bought mine at Whole Foods, but it may be available at Walgreens or any natral foods store.

SN28 - I wasnt suggesting youre a junkie!

Its just that opiate painkillers produce withdrawal symptoms very much like youre describing; the runny nose is "post rhinal drip" caused by withdrawal, the coughing is another symptom (opiates act to suppress coughing - thats why cough mixtures have codeine in them) and cramps and sleeplessness are two more, along with a splitting headache and feeling sick depending on the previous dosage that the body is missing.

Dehydration can also cause leg cramps so drink plenty of water along with your potassium enriched foods!
Google 'sleep hygiene' and you will come up with a ton of information on how to set up for good healthy sleeping. The longer you wait, the longer you go on this new schedule you've fallen into then the harder it is to reverse.
Good luck to you, sleeping problems can be miserable.

as for bananas, not good if you have chest congestion, just found that out.

I have horrble difficulties adjusting to a new place.

If you havent, you might try setting up your bedroom to mimic your old one, things in the same places...to me that gives me a feeling of a safe spot.

If you are going to try and re kick start your sleeping schedule, the prime times for totally recouperative sleep is 9-10 to 6-7.

I have fought insomnia all my life and still have to have something to help me sleep. But I did change my bedtime and now bedtimes is set and has become a habit now.  Tho alot of times I wake up to early if its anytime past 5 I go ahead and get up rather than fight it for an hour.

Alvacados are full of potassium.

Health food store have several products for leg issues or  RLS.

Valarian Root is also good to help with sleep is also relaxes the body

Try some Nyquil .. it'll knock you out, suppress your cold symptoms for awhile and hopefully get you a good night's sleep.

I go through insomnia every so often - my doc gave me a script for Ambien that I use very sparingly and only when nothing else works.  It kind of 'resets' me back into a better bedtime.   I tend to take melatonin a few nights a week just so I get a solid night's rest and to keep the insomnia at bay.

Hello-

1. take some vit C. and drink a ton of water.

2.  the feng shui of the new place is disturbed.    you must shield the extreme energy that is hitting the relax parts of your new home.  energy fields effect us.

You can easily do this by the position of furniture.   OH -do not have the bed where it can fall thru the door.  the alignment. under feng shui this is bad- as it is too easy to carry the body out.
Also- vertical blinds are a no no. one shold have no sharps aimed at them anywhere in the home.

With a re-arrange of furniture and accessaries in the home, you can achieve better harmony.

tune in to teh energy hun.   i moved into this old historic house a year ago.  my feng shui master said it has alot of competing energy,  so as i learn its energy i can deflect or enhnace it.   2 stairways-  in it- stair ways and doorwaYS  funnel energy.

also have nothing electric in the bedroom. electrical fields also harm.  this included TVs, cell phones.   if you must have such items unglug all the power to them. turning off is not enough

so hun, chug water all day, and situate your abode.    tonight will be better

Tips from my doctor about helping cure insomnia:

  • No caffeine other than in the morning
  • No food after dinner time
  • Turn your TV off before bed
  • Turn your computer off before bed
  • Meditate before bed, or at least hang out for a few minutes doing relaxing breathing exercises
  • Exercise during the day
  • Go to bed at a certain time every day, whether tired or not, and get up at the same time every morning
  • Ease up on day time naps

I agree with plenty of water, vitamin c, and potassium to aid your leg cramps. If your knee is injured, gel caps of cod liver oil make for a good anti-inflammatory (although you might burp up the lovely flavor afterwards).

Melatonin or Valerian Root work for some, as a natural sleep aid. They don't work for me, but others swear by it.

Good luck with this! As a long time insomniac, I know it can be frustrating and exhausting.

Is a regular exercise regimen an option for you? I have always found that to cure many things that might ail me.

gosh, guys... thank you so much.

lots of options here, and i'm glad to see it.

when i went to bed just after 5am, I slept soundly, but it's now 1pm and I'm just getting out of bed.

i'm only sleeping 8 hours, it's just the WRONG 8 hours.

thank you so much for all the advice, and if you think of more, keep it coming.

sleep is important, and you can never have too many ways to aid in getting plenty of rest.
