Just for the record, I try not to hog the name "American". You'll find me using US citizens or US Citizens depending on context. One must realize the Canadians are Americans and so are Mexicans, Brazilians and so forth.

One thing I have noticed is the lack of knowledge imparted to US citizens. We grow up thinking that this is the only country in which someone gets a supposedly fair trial when charged with a crime, and years ago that we were the only country with color TV. (which was true but only for a very short time, and when the rest of the world got it all of their technology produced better pictures except one - Russia's)

Also we grew up watching pictures of Russia, but in the cold winter and were almost led to believe that it it always that way there. In the sixties and seventies we were being so indoctrinated that the US was the best country in the world that we did not know that things were not a hundred years behind in the rest of the world.

We did grow out of that though, thanks to the internet and a few other things, but long ago we never heard about anything good happening in other countries, and were not only not told of scientific discoveries across the globe, actually we were warned about trusting scientific and/or medical studies conducted in other countries. All the while we had the most flawed system, and the truth was that research done in other countries was more likely to be valid than our own.

Looking for cites and quotes ? Look to this post. I lived it. Seriously when I was very young I believed the Rusiia was in black and white. I don't mean their TV, I mean the whole country.

I also had no idea there were cities in Canada, that it was wilderness and the Mounties were riding around looking for a girl named Nell.

Some things have changed fo the better I guess.

There are Tim Hortons everywhere in Michigan. I live across form Windsor so I have spent a lot of time in Canada.   Half of the Falls are in the US.  I perfer the US because the land is so much more diverse than it is in Canada. Even tho it does not seem like it at times we have zillions less misquitoes and black flies than Canada does.

If I do meet you at the Detroit border, we also have to include Lady H, that has to be a given!

You better believe it!  Actually, I have my spies waiting at all the crossings, keeping me posted for wayward CM-ers. :)

Growing up across the river from Canadia, watching their tv, listening to their radio and news, I just always accepted that there was a big old country of Way Different Folks right there.  Like, RIGHT there.  In elementary school we were asked what foreign countries we had visited and were told that CANADA DIDN'T COUNT because "everyone" had been there. Ah, skeeters and blackflies!  My parents' first experience of a country cottage was in SW Ontario in the summertime...  before Cutter bug spray was available.  No cottages for us, thanks!

When I was young, one of my fave books was this tour book of Canada, and I was mad with desire to see the NW Territories, esp Great Bear Lake, because there was this pic of a guy holding up a fish as big as he was.  I HAD to have one of those!  Then in later years I read about caribou going into the water to avoid the biting creatures and went out to eat some fish instead.

LOL!  We used to go on field trips to Stratford in high school, and our teacher was always very vehement about reminding us that we were going to a FOREIGN COUNTRY and to leave the drugs at home!  Because it would be an INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT!

beargonewild -> RE: Contrasting Neighbo[u]rs [?] (11/12/2008 8:38:21 AM)

Sheesh...speak for yourself. I am not different.....I am unique!
