Happy Veterans Day to all members of the US Armed Forces!  I pray we soon will enter a long period of peace, so none may be in harms way.  Remember to molesticate a Veteran today!!!  Deanna flies to me today, we are both Vets, so we will be molesticating each other.....a Marine and a Sailor....what a beautiful union!!!

Happy V Day to you and Deanna!
I am a proud army brat myself!

My father did TWO tours of duty in VietNam!!

I don't think we show enough appreciation year round to the vets.

Whenever I see one of the soldiers, that has lost a limb or is in a wheelchair,
I thank him, and ask him if I can give him a hug. {I am often in the Walter Reed area}.

I really would like to see a lot more done to help Vets and their families.
I am sending a warm thanks and loads of appreciation to all the Veterans that
have served or are currently serving our country!
You are the hero's of this country!

You all ROCK!!!!

Thank you all for your service to our country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To those I had the pleasure (and sometimes extreme displeasure) of serving with.
To those who wore the uniform proudly before me.
To those who wore it after me.

I give a toast to you.  Your reasons for serving don't matter to me in the slightest;  as long as you did your uniform proud.  That is all that matters.  I consider you all family.

For of you who didn't serve ... if you can find it in your heart (and busy schedules) ... find a way to a VA hospital and visit a patient there.  You've no idea how much a visit from anyone,  even a complete stranger,  can help lift the spirits of a warrior who may have no family left.

This is the best Veteran's Day that I can remember!

I am so proud to have served my country and am equally proud of every man and woman who has ever served. My father served during Vietnam and the most sobering thing I can remember was when I visited the Vietnam Memorial and located the names of several of his close friends on the wall. Men I never met who gave their lives in the name of our country. I rubbed their names on pieces of paper to send home to my dad and cried the entire time, not just for them, but for every person who has lost their life defending our freedom. For everyone who came home injured or changed in some way. For every family that had to worry or grieve.

Thank you Veterans!

While I myself never served in the military, I feel a profound gratitude towards those who did and do.  Thanks to yall, I sleep safe at night, and - despite grumbling about our government's excesses - enjoy a greater degree of liberty than pretty much anywhere else on the planet.

As a member of the group Soldiers' Angels, I'll be spending part of the afternoon up at the VA hospital not far from home, visiting with the vets who are there.

I've enjoyed my association with SA quite a bit.  I keep in touch via mail with a couple of different folks in the field that I "adopted" - and when one of my adoptees comes back to the states, I get a new one to keep in touch with.  Every couple of months, a small group of us goes up to the VA hospital to visit for a couple of hours.  One of the gals in this area volunteers there a couple of days a week.  (I would consider doing so, but don't feel like I have the emotional energy to commit to that sort of responcibility.)

Oddly enough, a couple of my close buddies here in town who were in the military previous - before SA was formed - consider the letters and care packages a Bad idea, rather than a good one.  The comment made was that while the idea is nice, folks who should be concentrating on Fighting (ie, their job) should not have the distraction of constantly being reminded that they're far from where they would Prefer to be - that it's to easy to fall into depression that way, and then forget to keep yer head down.  I have yet to decide whether I agree or disagree with that particular sentiment.

Let me provide you with a different opinion from a vet. Many vets come from broken families and receive little or no mail. It is depressing to never hear your name at mail call and never be the one sharing stuff out of the care package from home. Continue what you are doing.

Not to speak ill of your friends ... but speaking as a veteran who spent more time overseas than stateside while active duty ... they are doing soldiers a HUGE disservice by spreading that utter bullshit.

The only time I've EVER heard anything like "care packages make you soft" are from psychos I would not trust behind me ... government spooks ... or pencilpushers trying to inflate what they did in the service and think acting "hard" make the stories more believable.

Reminders of WHAT and WHO he is fighting for is sometimes the only thing that gets a soldier through the worst of times.

Ken, Razor - I will definately take what the two of you have said into consideration the next time I have an internal debate with myself over the subject.  It's helpful having an alternative viewpoint from someone else who was there.

(btw, Razor - while he wasn't a spook or pencilpusher, the one who made the comment Is a bit of a psycho.  A lovable psycho, but... )

I grew up a stone's throw (literally lol) from the largest military base in this state.  Having Tinker AFB in my back yard - both while growing up, and now - did play a huge part in how I view the military.  Partying way to much through my 20s with the army boys from Ft Sill down by the Tx/Ok border (still rather affectionately known as Ft Swill) played it's part as well.  Neither of my parents were in the military - mom is from a strictly civvie family, dad wasn't in but his father was in the Navy during II.  (Maternal grandfather tried to volunteer but got turned down and told no - he was working in the oil industry, and got told that his job here was more important than being potential cannon fodder.)  Finding out that I was preggers with the 21yr old kinda put the kabosh on My intended time in the military.

molesting a veteran seems like a wonderful idea!  i think i'll wait until he's feeling better and give him double.  cub's a disabled vet (army) and spent yesterday at the VA hospital getting treated for an aggrevation of the injury he got in the service.  i'm sure he'll be up to a backrub and a cuddle tho!  thanks to all who have allowed my and mine to live in freedom all our lives!

Just outta curiousity, gentlemen, since yall say that the care packages/letters/etc are a good thing.... any suggestions on what sort of stuff (other than things that don't spoil easily lol - that's a given) should be in 'em?  I'm always looking for new ideas on what to throw into the box when I start putting one together.

(edited to add : PM - yer right, molesting a vet sounds like a grand idea..... although it'll be easier for me, living as close to an active base as I do, to find an active duty boy or 3 to molest instead... heh)

It might be true that it's the same day world wide, however, it's not considered a holiday everywhere.  Hubby happens to be in Korea, and while he got a four day weekend out of the deal, it's not something the Koreans recognize.

I was Army during the Reagan years.  It was peace time.   I had a blast.  Granted, it was tough at times, but I have memories that will never go away.
One thing I want to say on record is that as much as I am  against the Iraq war, I am not ever against our Men and Women over there serving us well.  Each time I see a service person come in or on the street, I walk up to them and shake their  hand and say thank you.

Regards, MissSCD

I grew up listening to Walter Conkrite's somber tally on a daily basis...It seemed to me every broadcast ended with the # of dead in SouthEast Asia.
When I took my young son to Washington on a sight seeing tour we hit all the usual spots,as we walked the length of TheWall,I started to bawl, completely lost it.My son was a little perplexed he knew I wasn't of age(14 when the war ended) and wondered why it affected me so.I went to great pains to explain to him the feeling of eating your dinner every night and hearing 5 or 6 or 12 U.S. serviceman have died in S.E. Asia on a daily basis....how these young men had mothers ,fathers...sweethearts and how they never got to have children or the chance to grow old....I'm not sure he understood at the time.
He called me a last year and brought up that trip.....told me "Dad I understand now,and I wish I didn't "
My sincere thanks to all who have ever worn the uniform of this country,my eternal gratitude and sympathy to all those family's whose members have given in President Lincolns words " The Last Full Measure of Devotion" to their country...we as a nation can never pay our debt to you.
