I don't know about men, but I masturbate even when the real thing is available. There are multiple reasons for this. I can most easily and effectively bring myself to orgasm and sometimes I just like a quick and simple release. Sometimes I do not have the energy or desire for a full flesh-and-blood encounter. It may be a control thing as well -- I don't like to rely on others for anything. It also is sometimes just plain habit or ritual. And sometimes I just like to take five and be lost in a fantasy, all by myself.

It might be just the right punishment in a certain sort of case (and if this sort of case couldn't arise with you, don't imagine that it couldn't for someone else.) I thought masturbation was good, whether you are in a relationship or not? As far as a person's preferences, that's for them to decide. That said, the guideline I've heard before is that a guy will typically masturbate ( 8 - times having sex ) per week.
