Status: offline 		So I am arty, not practical.
We have a door - that keeps sticking.  It is totally out of line and will not shut.  It simply jams.  The alignment is out, but the is another door adjacent to it that is perfectly fine and closes no problem - so it isn't 'shifting'.  It isn;t swollen.  It isn't damaged.  Would sorting/tightening out the hinges assist?  Or should I consider something more major?

Top and side(Mostly handle side when you attempt to close it).  Interior.

Status: offline 		try tightening the bottom hinge, if that doesn't help, then remove both hinges, and chisel out a very little bit of the area where the bottom hinge plate sits. this may take a couple of tries to get it right, or, put a bit of a shim behind the top hinge plate.  that should change the door's angle.

Status: offline 		Thanks.  It does look as though it's the angle that is the problem. It doesn;t look as though it is sitting right.  I will try the hinges.  I didn't want to start shaving the wood if it's a positioning thing.

Talk sweetly to it, and promise it things you won't do.  Or, if you can live without the door, a drape across the doorway may work equally as well.

Status: offline 		Take the door down, use a level on the frame, and then the door, to find out where the issue is. You may have to shave/plane the door so it fits correctly. I would how ever try tighting the hinges first, just becouse it is the easiest.
hope it helps, if not you could try spanking the door untill it behaves....lol

Status: offline 		Take a tape and see if the frame is in square. Do the same with the door. If they both are then the door has expanded for some reason.

Status: offline 		Is the adjacent door interchangeable with this one? if so, try just switching doors, and see which one works.  if the offending door hangs up in both places, then the hinge positioning or door size might need to be addressed.

Status: offline 		WD40.    there are times a warped door is better tho.  I removed all doors here so as to get approved for the mortgage.  [it was easier then scraping off lead based paint by the deadline]

so now to put them back up?  arghhhhhhhhhhhh!   I managed 1/2.  I went wiht longer screws which wont be able to get even longer next time.

if the door is uneven,  how is the floor?  the wall ?  the entire room could be out of square.  maybe you can plan the edege enough that it fits.

Status: offline 		Other door isn't interchangable - but it is on the same wall and sits absolutely fine.
Yeah cjan - no more hanging.
No PA - the floor is even according to the spirit level on my tripod.
 
It could be expansion ray - I will look into that after I check out the hinges.

Status: offline 		Open the door and take by the knobs and gently lift it up and down.  If there is no play then tightning the hinges will do no good.
Check the hinges where they are mortised into the frame and the side of the door.  If they are flush then recutting the mortise is a waste of time.
Check the frame and door for squareness with both square and level.  If the frame is out of square prise the moulding off and shim the frame to bring it to square.  If the door is out of square use a plane to bring it to square.
