magicone -> Skin Clour and Obama (11/3/2008 12:21:19 AM)

Here in europe we observe the election very exactly and even when it may seems Obama will win tomorrow (we in europe hope that ), also it seems a lot of people when asekd and telling i will vote Obama may will not based on his skin colour and due the fact a lot of people dont wanna have a black president.
So what do you think?

How many people claim to vote Obama but at least behind closed doors wouldn't, based on the fact he is black and ... racism in the states - the country of freedom - still does exist?

All of the above.  There is racism, bigotry, gender bias all over the world.  Believe it or not, Americans are human beings just like Europeans with all the warts and scabs.  Some people will not vote for Obama because he is black, and some people WILL vote for Obama because he is black.   I think, however, that most americans vote for a candidate that they feel best mirrors their individual perception of what America should be..and not on some superficial prejudice.

Prejudice hatred among peoples exists all over the world...between local peoples and  the turkish immigrants in Germany, the muslim immigrants in France, the Indian/muslim immigrants in the U.K....between protestants and catholics, Jews and Arabs....between Shite and Sunni, african tribe vs african tribe,....unfortunately, it's what people do, I guess.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Skin Clour and Obama (11/3/2008 3:35:23 AM)

I'm sure there are a few that won't vote for him because of that reason.  Of course there is racism in this country; there is racism everywhere.  You live in Germany, how many Gypsies, Jews, blacks, etc. have filled the Chancellor position?  How many European countries have had a head of state that was not of white European decent?

Actually I find it more a theatre show then an election. People accusing eachother..digging in the past for flaws....checking information about family. 30 minute commercials....bla bla bla.

thishereboi -> RE: Skin Clour and Obama (11/3/2008 3:42:44 AM)

I am not voting for Obama, so I can't say for sure. But if someone is claiming to vote for him but really won't behind closed doors. Then they probibly are not going to admit it on the thread either. And yes there is still racism in the US. In fact it is all over the world.

Evility -> RE: Skin Clour and Obama (11/3/2008 3:44:47 AM)

It's called "The Bradley Effect". Ask Tom Bradley what he thinks about polls.

DarkSteven -> RE: Skin Clour and Obama (11/3/2008 5:38:02 AM)

Racism DOES exist.  The question is, what effect will it have?  How many will vote against Obama because of his skin color?  For that matter, how many will vote FOR him for that reason?

I'm assuming that those who would vote against him for his skin, would have voted against him anyway for another reason, so that the skin color itself won't be significant.

Kirata -> RE: Skin Clour and Obama (11/3/2008 6:13:40 AM)

I'm fine with his color, and with blacks in positions of power. I think most Americans are. We have black military officers, black judges, black senators, black governors. When it comes to race, I'm more concerned about what Obama thinks of America and the "typical white person"

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Skin Clour and Obama (11/3/2008 7:23:47 AM)

sadly racism is still alive on all cultural/racial fronts here.  i've overheard a conversation while riding the bus last week in which this person is only voting (first time in years) for Obama because he's black. the person whom he was talking to said the same.  there was no mention of supporting Obama's policies and views during their conversation ...simply the fact he's black was a good enough reason to vote for him.

Daddy and i both analyzed and discussed in detail Obama's plans despite differing in some issues and agreeing in others - He did vote for him over the weekend. i'm casting my ballot on Tuesday before heading out to cover the results all night long.

edited to add: you can say Daddy (who is white)looked beyond Obama's colour and studied what he had to offer this country as president to garner His campaign support and vote.

I couldn't wait to vote.  I voted for him because he's SMART, ARTICULATE ( and no, that's not a slam.. after Bush's bummbeling, embarassing, grammatically incorrect, southen drawl.. I looked for that in our next President.  I was tired of the embarassment.)  I wanted someone not afraid to talk other leaders instead of hiding behind threats to get them to bend to our will (like THAT endears us to anyone).  Yes, I voted for Obama.

Winston Muller. German Chancellor from 1963 to 1997. The English Oxford Dictionary states that Winston was "extremely black". 'Balls in your court, Slaveboy......have you ever voted for a man who can lay claim to being blacker than extremely black?

Christian I don't see Winston Muller anywhere on this list of German Chancellors. Who exactly is he? I also don't find any info on him on google.

I'm assuming this is a joke.  I'm afraid that English sense of humor is escaping me.  I don't get it.  Who's Winston Muller?

NorthernGent -> RE: Skin Clour and Obama (11/4/2008 1:56:13 PM)

True...Winston is conspicuous by his absence......but how shit must Walter Scheel have been to last all of 9 days in office?

Scheel, as acting chancellor, chaired the government meetings for a little over a week, until Helmut Schmidt was elected Chancellor.
