Owner59 -> Update makes XP look, feel like Vista. (11/2/2008 8:52:42 PM)

I have both OSs and just updated my XP desk-top.

Not sure how I feel about it but it`s a shrewd move, considering the splash that Vista made.

FWIW,I don`t mind Vista at all,but I was never into pirating or copying music/files/programs that I wasn`t supposed to.

oh yea I am thrilled.

Lockit -> RE: Update makes XP look, feel like Vista. (11/2/2008 8:56:58 PM)

I don't understand what you are saying... but if xp is looking like vista... I am scared.  I need another computer and do not want anything like vista!  One is enough!

Just look and feel,it`s not Vista.

Somebody enlighten me on this.   What are these Vista problems?  This cheap little laptop I'm working from came with it, and it seems to do everything I use a home computer for quite well.

Really.  Seriously.  What are the problems I'm not having, or not noticing that I'm having?

Lockit -> RE: Update makes XP look, feel like Vista. (11/2/2008 9:35:47 PM)

I have the older version of vista and I guess the newer one is better.  At first I didn't have any real problems.  It was a hassle in that it asked permission for every little thing... but no big deal.  Then I updated and the hell started.  Programs didn't work, I would lose things I was working on without doing anything at all.  Everything would just be gone.  Blank desktop.  I can't remember it all, but it took a wonderful dom around here, working on it by remote, many hours to get things to work for me.  I tried to take things on cd to Kinko's to copy, print and fax... they couldn't do anything with it and it said it was corrupted and then they told me they didn't work with vista.  I had to buy all these new things like a cam and programs to work with vista, including anti virus.  Then my printer which said it would work with vista, wouldn't and we had a hell of a time getting drivers to install properly.  Just nothing works as it should and it wasn't my adjusting to new things.. it was a problem even for people who work on computers when they tried to help.  Only one didn't throw his hands in the air.

I forgot... my backup would fill up and we could not empty it... still can't.  We had to redirect it to someplace else.  We could not make back ups period and it ruined countless dvd's trying.

Owner59: what updates? I'm on SP3 and all my XP's still look like XP.  What did you install?

Lockit: Sadly, Vista didn't get along with most of the hardware on the market at the time it was released.  A couple of years later and the playground is pretty much at peace once again.  New PC + Vista = pretty cool 'puter.  I still love XP but I'm starting to warm up to Vista.  Now if only there weren't so damn many versions...

Can I get a downgrade to make Vista work like XP?  Vista was installed on my new computer and I wind up swearing nearly every time I use it.  It's most annoying habit is having to ask "are you sure you want to do this" 3-4 times for everything I click on.  I also hate the picture manager that came as part of the package.  Why the F**** isn't "save as" listed as an option in any of the menus?  It pretty much goes on like that.  I haven't noticed any huge problems with it, just a perpetual string of minor annoyances.

Lockit -> RE: Update makes XP look, feel like Vista. (11/2/2008 10:11:14 PM)

Oh the picture thing makes no sense at all!  You can email it... if you can get past the are you sure's and whatever else it decides to do... but working that thing I have never figured out.  I finally put Word 6 and a picture program from that on it and got some things I liked better.

NuevaVida -> RE: Update makes XP look, feel like Vista. (11/2/2008 10:21:03 PM)

I just bought a new laptop and I guess it has a newer version of Vista. I love it. I love it more than I liked XP.

I think people had problems when Vista first came out, because of compatibility issues. I also heard that upgrading to Vista, rather than just buying a new computer with Vista, was problematic.

But I love my Vista. Then again, I'm an odd bird, so it's not so unusual that I like it so much. [8D]

I have an HP on top of vista.. I am told that that complicates it even more.

soul2share -> RE: Update makes XP look, feel like Vista. (11/2/2008 10:44:01 PM)

When I installed the SP3 on WindowsXP, the thing wouldn't recognize my modem......I ended up going back to a restore point 24 hours earlier and dumping the SP3 pack.  The SP2 seems to suit me fine, I'll stick with that.

A co-worker got her computer after her hubby got his...both came with Vista, they have all sorts of problems with his, but hers works fine...go figure!  Personally, I'm not replacing my WindowsXP with anything.....I'll use it til I can't use it anymore, then I guess I'll have no choice but to go to Vista....the laptop I got for my son gives him problems too....I told him to dump the Vista and load the Windows XP program from his disks from the PC I got for him a few years ago.....don't know if he did it yet tho.

Lockit -> RE: Update makes XP look, feel like Vista. (11/2/2008 10:47:28 PM)

I had someone check that out because I had the xp os I had bought.  But he said that I shouldn't do that because a lot of things might not work out so well and it would be a bitch to configure everything.  I know it is way over my head, so I bitched with tech until they sent me the disk for vista os and will just have to keep redoing everything.

I miss the stability of Win98. I still run it on one of my machines and it is/was my favorite of the Windows operating systems. It's been downhill ever since.

*shrugs* My laptop came with Vista and i haven't had a single problem. I had no trouble installing AVG and Live Messenger whatsoever. Don't know why people are complaining about Vista so much, it works fine and plays nice with others.

I run vista 64 bits with out a problem too
Disabled UAC though...but people with less experience should keep it enabled.

IF you want vista with an other look..select the classic look..and it will be like xp or win95.
OR download 1 of the million skins available.
or "make vista look like XP

Irishknight -> RE: Update makes XP look, feel like Vista. (11/3/2008 5:03:12 AM)

My puter came with a castrated version of Vista and it is the worst thing I have ever worked on.  It frequently freezes up for no apparent reason when I am playing games.  The so called "compatability mode" does not work with most of the games I want to play.  Lastly, it tends to change settings or ignore what you tell it to do at times.  I miss XP and I had it from te week it first came out.  It was a far superior system IMO.
Top that off with the computer store lying to me and telling me that the computer had a word processing program installed when all it had was notepad.  Notepad is not a word processing program.  It is a waste of space that could be used for something useful.  This led to an argument at the store while I was trying to purchase Word that ended up with me getting banned from the store.  Apparently when a 110 lb security guard threatens to throw you out and you make him pee his pants, you are no longer welcome.  Had he asked me to leave, I would have.  Threats ... I don't respond so well to those.
