Hello newbie fallenravenlyn, and welcome. I don't have any info to share, but more a word of caution.
Always remember this -- do not believe everything that you may read online. Consider it all as "fantasy", NOT reality, and you should be OK. I know of someone who "learned " about this lifestyle online, took it all as fact, and now is so screwed up that they can't handle the *reality* of a D/s relationship. They want to do to others and have done to them things that are unsafe, irresponsible, and just not possible to do. And they cannot understand "why" these things can't be done because "I read about it online, so it must be true!!".
The best advice I can give you is to find a local BDSM group and join it. I don't know of any in Detroit offhand, but there is a group in Toledo -- 'Toledo Power and Trust' I believe is their name. I belong to a local BDSM group in Cleveland -- OhioSMART. Go to their website and you will find links to other groups in this area.
Also, read books. The informative ones, not the fantasy story ones. A great book is I recommend "SM 101" written by Jay Wiseman. It is well written, informative, and done with a good sense of humor.
