The whole American continuum has been shifting to the right since Ronald Reagan. So the shift rightward has been ongoing since 1980, which was 28 years ago.

What this means is that the "fringe left" has been completely knocked out of the political arena (Ralph Nader, for instance) and that the Fringe Right (Bush-Cheney) found itself in the White House.

Obama only looks leftist by our new 2008 standards, but by 1960s or 1970s standards, he'd be a right wing Republican.

What you are witnessing now is a shift back toward the center and away from the Right Wing fringe.
