DarkSteven -> October Sky (10/22/2008 6:04:43 PM)

I just watched this movie again with my girlfriend.sub.

What a beautiful movie.  It captured a dying small town ruled by coal mining and high school football, a teen's awkward relationship with his stubborn father, labor/management fighting, and the spreading menace of the Russian Sputnik.  Add to this four teens' fight to make a hopeless dream some true.  For us techie types, there's rocketry.  And the whole story's true, down to the dying teacher who inspired her class.

With so many American movies being buffoon comedies or testosterone-laden action films, it's good to see one that shows simple grit and determination.

What films do you think depict America accurately?

Yup. Good movie.

Who did the score for that film? Was it James Horner?

DarkSteven, that was a really good movie!  I am not sure I could pick one movie that dipict's America because there are so many that show different aspects of America and different times in America.  If I have to pick one... I am going to need some time to work on that one! lol

Great movie. I show it to my science class every year.

One of my favorite movies that depicts America (or a part of it) accurately is Barry Levinson's "Avalon".  One family's journey.

My favorite depiction of a slice of Americana is Dr Stranglove.  It really captures the fear, paranoia, angst, etc of the Cold War.

On a less grim note, I really like Breaking Away.

I'm sure I could think of others, but those are the 1st 2 that popped into my head.

I liked A River Runs Through It

DarkSteven, I absolutely *love* that movie.  If you're a reader, the book is even better, it fills out the story.  I love all 3 in the series - Rocket Boys/October Sky,  The Coalwood Way, and Sky of Stone.

I also loved Pleasantville, and think there are some really good lessons to learn in that movie.

And of course, Stand By Me is the ultimate "slice of life" kinda movie.

Greedy, A River Runs Through It is one of my favorites.

"For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding. "
