Would you sign up for this public good project.?  If so why or why not?

100,000 are needed.  I dont know if it is limited to the US.

alot of good could come out of it.  And are you now an organ donor?  By that I mean the legal say so on your drivers license.

Have you ever participated in any medical studies?

How much do you think YOU benefited from modern medicine?   Candidly.

It looks intriguing. I signed up to participate.

I am not currently an organ donor. I had been afraid of harvesting.

When I die, they can take everything besides my eyes. Its in my will, I am sure that many people will be saved or at least helped by my passing. Also thats one of the reasons I donate blood, since I turned 18 I've donated more than 10 gallons of my own blood. So sure, they can have my dna, I'm not doing much with it.

I'd sign up.  Why?  To further medical progress.

I am an organ donor.  Though as I personally know.  That means nothing depending on how you pass away.
I've offered up the organs of my family members and been told they are not viable.

Heart attacks and cancer.  So, it depends the day I die if I actually will be.

Our uncle just passed away about a month ago.  He offered up his eyes.  To me it is one of the most amazing things you can do for another is to offer them sight or something they never had.  You don't need it anymore anyway.

I've been in small studies.  For the most part I've never been sick other than some stomach issues the military gave me.
So, no nothing major.  I'm yet to benefit from modern medicine.

I've already filled out the appropriate paperwork to donate whatever is left of me to the local university. Granted, I plan on that being about 60 years from now so I am not sure if any of it will be worth saving......

I also signed up. They can test my genetics and stuff all they want. I think it would be interesting as hell.

I am an organ donor. By that I mean, the back of my licensce is signed, my family knows my wishes on the subject.
My Daughter is an Organ Donor. By that I mean, somewhere, someone is walking around, seeing the world through Olivia's eyes. That's a very good thing. (But I am kind of passionate about the whole organ doner thing. Changes need to be made in that system, big time. I suspect there are laws in place that are costing untold numbers of potential donors.)
I have donated plasma and blood and participated in programs to enhance my blood and plasma for donation (for instance, to help with TB and tetnus inoculations).
I am a bad diabettic. I take insulin only when pregnant, thanks to modern medicine providing alternatives. Some of those alternatives are injections, but at least they are not as dangerous as insulin. (which is much safer than raging out of control diabettes, but hard to control, compared to newer drugs).

TSAT, you are right.  Changes in organ donation must happen.  When I wanted to allow it on me- the fee was an extra $1- at the time I did not want to pay it.  [costs of the renew DL]

They aren't really going to save it. What you signed up for, you will be useful if you are a 95 year old homeless drunk who gets squashed flat by a passing car. Your dissection, or rather, the dissection of your corpse, will help prepare doctors, and a few advance level members of a few other professions - Master's level nurses, higher level paramedical professional, various higher degrees in various forensic careers. You will be contributing to society, in a real way, even after you are gone, LaTigresse

PA Hunk -
In order for my daughter's organs to be used, I had to sit for an hour on the phone answering questions that - some made me cry. some made me want to vomit.
A long session of graphic descriptions of my daughters body parts. 'Can we this?' 'Can we use this?' 'Can we use this?' -
'Can we use her outer epidermis skin layer?' 'can we use her cornias and retnas?' 'can we use the tissue and ligaments of her joints?' ect, ect. Belive me when I say, I would have been very happy to just say, 'please, use anything that can help.' I did say that, over and over, but the law required i give consent, one part at a time. How many parents, husbands, wives, adult children, do you think give up on that process?
'Has she ever used injectible illegeal drugs?' 'has she ever had sex with a person who has used injectable illegeal drugs?' answer: My daughter was active in the youth chasity movement. She was a virgin. 'Has she ever had sex with an illegeal immegrant?' ' Has she ever been out of the country?' I think the answer made the interviewer cry, though I couldn't swear to it. Answer: 'She was planning to go to Rome when she graduated with her B.A., before coming back to start Grad school. She had a friend there she was going to stay with... She wanted to go to Ireland for her honeymoon, someday, when she met the right one...

No new engriefed family member, with grief moments to hours old, should be put through this in order to get those orgins into the living people that need them. The families of those waiting surely do not want this.

I am so sure that the orgin donation orginazation does not want this - it is clearly required by law. forty five minutes. surely it didn't need to be that long or that hard.

Tsat,   understood.  If i were asked THOSE questions, and I am being candid with you; I would say "This interview is over, good bye."

I am guarded over use/diss-use of my attention span.  Not only that but my time is valuable as well.

I probaly would  go along with time used, but not the grilling.

The lawyers make it so even when one gets a routine surgery everything is verbalized .....

Thank you. It's been three years now. I have my three wonderful sons, still, of whom I am SO proud.
To get back on topic, I can't decide. I went and looked at the story.
I agree that, even if the scientists don't see an advantage right now, a huge pool of data will eventually lead to a lot of useful info.
OTOH, i di think the day is coming when DNA info will be the new descrimination issue. Do I want to risk my children being subject to that? I just don't know...

Yes, I am an organ donor. I was a paramedic for six years and saw many a person that would have had a vastly different life if someone donated a kidney to them.

No, I do not donate blood. My kids did when they were in high school and they came home with  major bruises from sloppy techs. I could start an IV better in my sleep. I also have tats, in Oklahoma tattooing was illegal until a few years ago and believe me the techs are nasty about donors with them.

Yes, I do occasionally participate in medical research or studies. For an ancient old lady, I have good health and do not take any prescription medications.

I was also a patient at the dental school for five years. They did about $12,000 worth of work in my mouth for cost. I've never regretted it, the time and energy of participating was priceless. Four dentists graduated off my mouth and I will have all my teeth for the rest of my life.

Sage.

I am an organ donor and have been for years....Thank god, they have not come for one yet.  I am not sure about the DNA thing, I would have to know more about it.
I would want to be sure that it was not being used for alternative purposes.

Those are horrible questions to put any grieving mother or family member through, and I truly sympathise with you.

Part of the reason they have to grill people like that is to protect themselves in this sue-happy society that we live in.  Somebody, somewhere either did or would see the opportunity to make a few million dollars by suing the organ-procurement company over some loophole found by some bottom-feeding attorney.  "I didn't know they would take her ______________!!! (fill in the blank)  They didn't tell me that!  I'm damaged, and I want compensation!"

It's unfortunate, but true.
