The Chicago Tribune for the first time in its 161 year history endorses a Democratic party candidate for President of the United States.

they must be owned by the Sun Times.  The other Chicago paper.... lol.  The trib was always the conservative paper.   ..unless of course you live on the south side- then one doesnt notice it as much.

Gee..   I wonder how much longer the newspaper will be.... ...something we .....hold as a paper and on the doorstep at 5am... :-)

Yup- I grew up there.    111th and Harlem to 127th,   la Grange to Pulaski, the old stomping ground.   Harlem in the area actually got street lights the whole way back then-and the train tracks were elevated.   You know- how wonderous the mass transit is from the SW suburbs....  yikes-

Termyn8or -> RE: It only took 161 years! (10/17/2008 7:04:06 PM)

Thats near my old school.  115th and Pulaski.    My Greenwood was always a solid area. A lot of LEO live there for residency.   The corner across from the car dealer was a farm back in 1981.   I spent more time then I cared to at the CTA at 111th. Family buried in those cemetaries that on go back to Ridgeland. Av..

I had a great life then.  I mean now if good too.  Coming of age has a spark and zest that anything in life is posssible.  On eof my 1st jobs was a a curriour from the western suburbs to downtown to the NW.  lol.  thats when I found lower wacker. :-)

Oh Moraine was more intimate back then. Today it is just a fancy building, (IMO)

PAHunk, one question:  how do you pronounced the word "three"?

Three or Tree?

Three.       (why do you ask?)

Worked with a guy, from Chicago, many years ago, when I lived in southern Illinois.  He pronounced it "tree", I will admit that I found it (and him) quite endearing.

Gotcha.  :-)

As to accents, I dont fit there, or here.  I am stuck in the middle. This is inconvenient  on phone calls if I want to be annomous.    The "AR" is louder/longer here... but my tone does not = NYC or Boston on words like "car", 'start".

The menonites live here, and some of their words  creaped in.

"yepper".   "crick" (creak)  "winder" (window)  "picking up the house" (cleaning)
and my favorite, is giving directions.  Go down to where the joneses barn use to be, turn right go down a ways, you cant miss it."
[it goes with not having adresses. many adresses were known only by the postman and deeds office, but under 911 - now each home must have a logical address.  (imagine that) -so now may have 2 addresses...] [  Chicago and other places are set up that one is always so many 100 west, and so many 100 north or south.  so one can always find a location by that.  ei- 7200 west 111 south, = 111th and Harlem.]

LOL

KatyLied -> RE: It only took 161 years! (10/18/2008 7:46:30 AM)

No, it's not pick up the house.  It's "read up" the house!

Thats how I word it, 'read up"-  :-)

cjan -> RE: It only took 161 years! (10/18/2008 10:30:57 AM)

The correct pronunciation is "tree", just as in dis, dose, dat, da bears, da cubs, etc.

I grew up on da south side, kinda, hated it and moved to Lincoln Park as a young adult.
