Think about it. If Obama gets elected and brings the troops back home.Unemployement will rise sharply. If the people are going back to their old jobs they will replace the ones hired to replace them. The recession is far from over.

You wouldn't suggest we leave people in positions where they could be killed to help unemployment?

For the money we wasted on this war you could of just paid everyone and let them spend us out of the recession.

They won't be coming home, Ray.. they'll be redeployed to Afghanistan. [:(]

No. What I wanted to say that unemployment is going to get a lot worse.

Possible but not inevitable. First, many will STILL be in the Armed Forces, second, we aren't talking about an incredibly huge number of temporary forces in terms of the entire economy, and third, those hands can well add to output, create their own business, etc.

This is a country of 300,000,000 people, and we have about 300,000 troops deployed in hot zones. Maybe 400,000; hard numbers aren't something I can find easily on google, which is actually kind of reassuring. Having been a soldier I don't exactly want people to know just how many of us there are near your friendly neighborhood third-world armed militia. Still, this link is telling: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iraq_orbat.htm

If you do the math, that's about 1 tenth of 1 percent of the U.S. population; and a lot of those troops are full-timers, others are business owners and employers, still more are going to come back to jobs, comfortably, with no contiguous loss of employment for someone else; thus lowering the unemployment rate, however minutely. Then you'll have all of the full-timers coming home and spending money, boosting local economies and increasing job opportunities.

Some towns may be affected if they have a strong local military population, such as the Tidewater region.

Last but not least, the need for skilled workers, especially in the tech sector, is screamingly high. There is a dire need for skilled--skilled, mind you--programmers and professionals. I imagine that this isn't isolated to the I.T. field.  Not even India can keep up with the demand, and they're churning out decent techies like there's no tomorrow.

Not only will a number stay in the armed forces but a large number are reservists and they are for the most part employed already.

Send the women home to their kitchen sinks where they belong, goddammit.

When the lads get back you will need so many psychotherapists and PTSD counsellors, you will probably spend your way out of a recession on that.

I don't understand this.  The majority of the troops are full time army, are they not?

I don't think getting people killed is a good way to keep unemployment down.  Even though I am already unemployed I would gladly stay that way a little longer if it meant keeping people alive.

Or Obama will send them to shitholes like Darfur, Somalia or Haiti and call them "peacekeepers" ala Clinton.

FP:

Obama isn't bringing any troops home from Iraq, or anywhere else.  Anyone who believes this is being extremely naive.

This is not the end of WW2 with 15 or 16 million men and woman returning to the labor force.  These are professional, career volunteers.  Most of these brave souls, and we are lucky to have people like this still in our country, are their for a career.  The economy has a lot more to deal with than a couple of hundred thousand troppers coming home.

edit: added millions...an ooops!

Isn't the US Army a professional fighting force in that the job they had before was being in the Army?
