PanthersMom -> RE: california is burning again (10/14/2008 8:41:17 AM)

cub has family in the fire service out west, seems like they're always somewhere fighting fires, this time it's california's turn.  seems like just a couple months ago they had other huge fires going on.  sometimes i wonder what's left to burn.

its from LA to SD apparently....so i guess its a rather large area....people are fleeing...

but why do these fires start....i hear them every year in california....

careless fires from campers, careless smokers dropping butts, arson, lightning, things get so dried out they go "poof!" with the slightest spark.  next thing you know it's a raging inferno and you're running for your life.

typically, they start in Forest lands, which encompass millions of acres here in California.  lots of folks live within the forest boundaries, or very very close to the edge.  the Bureau of Land Management and the California Department of Forestry does little to nothing in the way of prevention---they require "defensible space" of 200 yds around structures, but there is no defensible space from the forest lands to private land.

add to that the fact that the last time there was measurable rainfall, it was March, so everything is nice and dry with humidity in the single digits.

put humans in the mix and watch some idiot park their car on the side of the road with a hot tail pipe that ignites some tall grass...
or takes the family out to the campground in the forest and takes the 22 for some target practice--all it takes is one spark off of a rock...
or the times when Pacific Gas and Electric has been lax at trimming back/maintaining trees a safe distance from power lines...
or someone has their mower out, cutting back their defensible space and the blade hits a rock and sparks...
or someone throws a cigarette down...
then there are those that like to start fires because it gets their dick all hard...
etc.

It should also be known that the native ecology of parts southern CA, the chapparal, is fire prone naturally. The stuff would burn on a regular basis even without human activity.

This fire it going to be hard on La if it gets closer to town.

It's Hugo Chavez sending his compatriots sympathetic to the cause. [;)]

Merc... the news reports I've seen haven't helped me to pinpoint the areas its burning.. could you give me some landmarks?

NuevaVida -> RE: california is burning again (10/14/2008 8:37:39 PM)

Greedy, this might help:

Mostly in southern california.

beth that was a great post on why the fires start. You were spot on.

we're all just a bunch of sinners here...that's why we have to burn [:D]

seriously, the weather conditions this time of year wreak havoc with just a spark...the wind is hot and dry, just makes it a lot tougher for the firefighters to do their job.

WyldHrt -> RE: california is burning again (10/14/2008 8:53:48 PM)

The Juliet Fire was burning fairly close to here last night. When I walked out from the bank, it was quite visible headed downhill straight for the 76, with lots of homes between it and the freeway.
This after being evaced for 5 days last year because my town was surrounded by the wildfires. [>:]

BTW, DomKen is quite correct. The ecology of Southern Cali calls for burning every 5-10 years, but in nature these fires would not burn so hot or so long. Fire suppression allows the fuel load to build to the point where wildfires burn completely out of control once started.
