this is yet another conspiracy theory.

KatyLied -> RE: FEMA- 500,000 coffins on hand (10/12/2008 4:58:07 PM)

Disaster preparedness takes on all sorts of forms.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: FEMA- 500,000 coffins on hand (10/12/2008 4:59:49 PM)

Why 500,000 coffins?   One word......Zombies.

thornhappy -> RE: FEMA- 500,000 coffins on hand (10/12/2008 5:02:45 PM)

I saw a few posters say they were plastic septic tanks (and didn't meet regulations for coffins.)

servantforuse -> RE: FEMA- 500,000 coffins on hand (10/12/2008 5:05:15 PM)

If it's on youtube, it must be true..I'm sure that it's Bushs fault either way..

They are there for all of those who will die due to election related stress.

Yup.  After November 4 they will have to call a black.....liberal Democrat.....with the middle name Hussein ..from Cook County  ...Mr.  President.  That should do it although I question whether  the cause of death could ever be listed as a "heart" attack.  I guess I really am a sadist at heart because I am "lovun" this.

bipolarber -> RE: FEMA- 500,000 coffins on hand (10/12/2008 8:19:52 PM)

Let me put it to you THIS way... suppose something like the the Tsunami of four years ago were to take place somewhere along the U.S. coast, with similar results... or maybe one of those 47 oh-so-safe nuclear plants that McCain wants to slap up overnight decides to melt down...

Would YOU want to be caught without 500,000 coffins available? Or would you rather just like to dig a huge pit, and start shoveling the dead into it, and have planes air drop the lime? Realtively "proper" burial, vs. the "landfill" solution...

Your call.

My guess would be that, as the federal agency having to do...and deal with calamitous, destructive, events, those events being ones that cause lots and lots of death and destruction...that they made a fairly safe bet....there's gonna be some dead people.

(Who are gonna need to be put in a box).

As many as 500,000.

(It's a gut feel, but I'm trusting my instincts on this one).

bluepanda -> RE: FEMA- 500,000 coffins on hand (10/12/2008 8:23:45 PM)

If the dead are wandering about doing... well... whatever mischief it is that zombies do, why would they need coffins? There must be some other explanation.

PanthersMom -> RE: FEMA- 500,000 coffins on hand (10/12/2008 8:25:28 PM)

As some one who actually does emergency planning for a living I can tell you that I would believe 500,00 body bags (but I don’t actually think that is true, that maintain a much smaller stock pile and have done so for years).  As for the number?  Pandemic influenza would be the most likely culprit for mass casualties in the US over a short period of time(this needing a major stockpile.  If you are so worried, there are many wonderful sites out there aimed at helping you prepare for disasters of all kind.  So get a ‘go bag’ together, stay informed, and be ready.

I can go on a half hour's notice.  Most of the same gear I use for camping, plus a chain saw for making a semi-permanent shelter. Extra bedding. Several rolls of duct tape, and several more rolls of plastic sheeting. Rain gear, warm clothing, medical supplies, batteries. Spare gas cans. The Winchester .308, the Colt .45, the .357, the .22 for small game, and one of the 12 gauges for birds. Anywhere from 100 to 300 rounds for each weapon, all safely stocked in the bottom compartment of the gun cabinet with a gym bag ready to stuff them into. Fishing gear. Vitamin supplements, freeze-dried food, gatorade mix. Packs of vegetable seeds, replaced with new seeds every year. And so forth. However long it takes to pack the car is how long it would take to get on the road, and I know exactly where I'm going; 300 miles north of here on the Canadian border. Someone else can use my plastic coffin; I don't plan on needing it.

Panda darling, the guns will be useless if you are in an urban setting and not allowed in a shelter.  I assume you think you will be hunting for your supper, but if there is a disaster so significant that you will need the type of list you provide, hunting will be the LEAST of your worries (and not ideal even under great conditions).  As someone both in the EM field and a Professor of EM, I am always dismayed at the level of misinformation out there.  PS_ if your house is on fire, the most LIKLEY scenario for anyone, none of all that will matter-you need to be out the door within MINS and with copies of paperwork and some toiletries for your emergency sheltering; guns not required.  Disaster preparedness is NOT about surviving the mythic post-apocalyptic environment; it’s about dealing with the annual flooding, fires, hurricanes, etc that the vast majority of American’s are actually at risk for.

Its...damn ya got me. Maybe preventive measures. Stop the zombie horde at 500K! throw them in coffins and bury them! hurry! god no!! *static*

An urban setting? An urban setting is the last place in the world I plan to be if anything truly catastrophic goes down (such as the flu pandemic you mentioned earlier), and if something that bad happens i want no part of any shelter. I want as many miles as possible between me and everyone who didn't prepare.

The fact that I'm prepared for the absolute worst case scenario doesn't mean I'm not equally prepared for most lesser emergencies as well. But I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where there are very few large-scale natural disasters such as flooding, hurricanes, whatever. Our biggest worry in Minnesota  is tornadoes, which of course can be quite problematic but are also comparatively localized. Fires? Sure, if the house catches fire, I'm out the door, and all my essential documents are in a fireproof safe that should be OK even if I don't have time to grab it on the way out the door. But given that this thread is about the supposed stockpiling of hundreds of thousands of emergency coffins, I was speaking in terms of large scale catastrophes.

Zombies don't care about geography.
