All this election-year political talk on Collarme got me nostalgic, so I whipped out my old "California uber alles" (1991) by Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy.  You know, the one that starts: "I'm your governor Pete Wilson, ya know, the baddest governor to ever grab the mike and go BOOM!"  Wow, I forgot how much fun that song was!  Some highlights:

I'm so proud to know the Great Communicator
Wanna be known as the Great Incarcerator
I'll blow environmentalists away
And I'll be the Fuhrer some day
I keep cuttin' public education
Even though we rank 45th in the nation
I've got a plan for the minorities
Send'em to the California Youth Authorities
From San Francisco Urban Elementary
To Pelican Bay State Penitentiary
There they can work for the master race
And always wear a happy face
Close your eyes, it can't happen here
Big Brother in a squad car's comin' near
Come enjoy the surf and sun
And keep California number one!

It was a very intelligent and inspired cover/tribute, I gotta admit.

Although, personally, I've got a real fondness for NoMeansNo's acapella version of "Looking Forward to Death"

Wow! Synchronicity, LaM. I was getting nostalgic, too. So I tried to get in touch with some of my ol' buds from our special PAC, The Commie Fag Junkies For Reagan, to see about the possibility of a reunion bash. No soap, so far.

I rather like the original by The Dead Kennedys

I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles
And never frowns
Soon I will be president...

Carter Power will soon go away
I will be Fuhrer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school
Your kids will meditate in school!

[Chorus:]
California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Uber Alles California

Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face

Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro' on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay
Mellow out or you will pay!

[Chorus]

Now it is 1984
Knock-knock at your front door
It's the suede/denim secret police
They have come for your uncool niece

Come quietly to the camp
You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp
Don't you worry, it's only a shower
For your clothes here's a pretty flower.

DIE on organic poison gas
Serpent's egg's already hatched
You will croak, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown
When you mess with President Brown

[Chorus]

Nothing beats the original.  I like this version too:

I am Govenor Schwatzenegger
Pretty soon I'll be dictator
When "they" make me President

Democracy is going away
Hasta Lavista Ba-by
I will command all of you
Kindergarden cop in every school
Or I vil Terminate you

California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles Callifornia
Uber Alles California

Enron will control you
Like they staged the recall coup
Steriods for the master race
So you can all haff my face

Close your eyes "can't happen here"
Bush and Cheney are already here
Third Reich won't comeback you say
Not unless Fox News has their way
Can I grope your titties today?

California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Uber Alles California

MANDATE, two thousand und four
Knock knock at your bedroom door
It's the homland security police
Your a terrorist
And so is your niece

Drag you secretly to a camp
Where we keep all de gurly-men
Don't you worry it's all for a cause
Feeding Haliburtons claws

Die on your feet of uranium death
North Korea, or Iran
Run you over with my humver baby
When you mess with Scwartzenegger
And all the money that's making him bigger

California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Uber Alles California

I'll be back.

Just realized I never got around to responding to this.  I like the version by Disposable Heroes more than the original for a couple of reasons.  First, let's be honest, California was a lot further from being a police state under Jerry Brown than it was under Pete Wilson.  (Not convinced?  Ask your black neighbors.)  But mainly my reason is that the words to the Disposable Heroes' version are more coherent and much more biting.  "I got a solution for the minorities,/ Send'em to the California Youth Authorities."  That's a pretty strong political statement.  I don't get much more out of the original than that Jello Biafra is a malcontent.

I remember them. It's a sad reminder that as you age, the music you listened to in your yoof sounds exponantially much cooler compared to the pap bullshit today's yung 'uns listen to.

That's true for the original- I mean, what could you really do with Jerry Brown other than make fun of him?- but the Reagan version (titled "We've Got a Bigger Problem Now") was a lot more cutting. Jello got more political with each album.

Here's a linky for the Schwartzenegger one, since I hadn't heard it until slaveboy posted it. The Melvins did a great job of duplicating the DK sound.

One of the scarier things, in my mind- if you change "Soviets" to "Muslims" and "Japanese" to "Chinese", you'd never guess "Stars And Stripes of Corruption" was recorded over 20 years ago.

Man, now I'm going to be surfing YouTube all night for Jello vids...

And sort of veering closer to being on-topic... If I find a Genitorturers cover of "Bleed for Me" I'll be in serious need of clean underwear.
