bipolarber -> RE: govt listened into phone sex off Americans (10/10/2008 6:50:31 AM)

And they recorded those calls, mostly between married couples.

(Always nice to know your government has blackmail material on file, isn't it? After all, they may need to shut you up at some point about opposing things like wars, or abuses of power.)

Yet another reason I shall avoid phone sex. Like I need another reason.......

I wonder if the tape is then placed in our "permanent record"....remember back in school that was a big deal?  then as one got older it meant nothing...and now it once again has meaning.

As a long time household member with a retired military person that had more clearance investigations than I even have a clue of, I know there is some sort of file on me. I really don't care.

I mean really, what deep dark scary stuff, that is of national security interest, is really in most of our skeletal closets anyway??

suhlut -> RE: govt listened into phone sex off Americans (10/10/2008 7:48:34 AM)

Ya know.. its not at all about listening in on General public phone sex, but instead listening in on phone calls from those serving in the armed forces, not just to phone sex, but also likely a officer telling his mom "that i miss your peanutbutter cookies".. ya know.. that type of stuff.

And to me.. they have a right to do that, and why? Because those serving in Armed Forces, have certain rules to follow, which include not revealing exact locations, and other information, that might be concidered a security leak. What better way, to make sure that type of info isn't leaked back, then by listening in on the conversations?

Though, i also think all officers should have been told their phone calls would be monitored, and to avoid anything overly personal, that they might not like others listening in on.  i doubt very many would have been having "phone sex" if theyd known.

Here's the thing: I hear all the time that 'more government' is bad and that people's individual rights matter more than anything. It's hammered that the government has no business peeking into our private business: yet, there is mounting evidence that reveals government's blatant disregard for people's privacy. It is also worrying that whilst the government has the right to peek deep into people's private business, it becomes more and more secretive and coverups seem to increase exponentially.

Thankfully, this kind of government is on its way out.

Isn't it funny that these are the same people who believe  that the government should stay out of things, yet are over eager for the government to dictate who can be married and what a marriage is.  It seems they want the government to stay out of the things they wish, but are more than happy to have the government intervene with any thing that they might not agree with.

I find it funny that some smartass kid just got five years in Federal prison for getting into Sarah Palin's boring-ass email, while the same government who sentanced him, is pulling shit like this. "Do as we say, not as we do."

I agree with kittin... this shadow government of thugs needs to go!

Bethnai -> RE: govt listened into phone sex off Americans (10/10/2008 10:11:46 AM)

It was not just military.

The two whistle blowers were on Nightline last night and stated that the way that the laws are written it just has to be approved by the lawyers.  I think one comment was that the way it was set up it is almost self defeating. A book is coming out this week or next week the Shadow something or other.
