Status: offline 		We were about to purchase a GPS system (Garmin Nuvi 255W) but my daughter suggested we look at the new iphone that includes GPS.  That would cost us more because the monthly fee is more than our current phones.  Our Verizon contract is up, so we could switch to AT&T. Neither of us would use the ipod or text messaging on the iphone, but we would probably use the email and internet access even though Hubby has a laptop.  We are driving cross country in Nov.  Anyone have any input on this?

Status: offline 		You can buy the verizon navigator which also will give you directions. Although not if you're so far out of your area that your on 'extended service', which I still don't know what it was but it ate phone charge searching.

Status: offline 		Well, without any actual numbers all i can say is that I went from Shreveport, LA (where my GPS broke) to the west coast, then back to the east coast, with nothing more than a AAA map of the U.S. Long haul is easy as long as you remember which direction you're going.

Also, if you carry an iPhone, you significantly increase the chance that someone will assume that you're a tool.

Finally, as I have the idea that you're not among the 18-21 demographic, consider how much time you really want to spend trying to simultaneously type and read text on something roughly the size of a pack of cigarettes.

Status: offline 		I love my Garmin.  It's gotten me out of traffic on the I-95 loop around Washington DC on more than one occasion.  Need I say more?

Coincidentally, I have both the iPhone 3G and the Nuvi 255w.

The iPhone is good for directions when you're walking around in a city or if you're a passenger in a vehicle but it has some big drawbacks when used as a GPS. There is no text to voice capability and unless you have it plugged into a car charger, you'll eat the battery before you know it. For driving long distances, I would go with the Nuvi. It'll work where there is no cell service and it does everything you'll want a GPS to do.

Status: offline 		I use Rand McNally's navigational system.....maps.  I do this odd little thing before I take a trip.....I plot my routes and plan ahead.  It's amazing, but I've never been lost.  I know, how is that possible without the aid of an expensive electronic gadget?

Status: offline 		If reading maps isn't your thing you can also use something like mapquest to get the driving directions. You'll simply need a passenger to check the directions when needed.

But long distance travel in the US is a pretty simple matter. Figure out what interstate highways get you closest to your destination and then find out how to go from the interstate to the final destination. Presumably you already know how to get to the interstate from where you'll start the trip.

ha ha omg I constantly hear that from my Garmin. 

I wouldn't be without it though...especially as I am one of those people (women) that has to turn the map book around and around to try and make sense...and then usually still end up turning left when I should have turned right.

When i drove from WA to FL and back a few years ago i used AAA maps and books.  They were very helpful but don't tell you where the next motel, gas, McD's or Starbucks is.

Since this trip will be across the northern states (WA to OH) in Nov. and Dec. it would be nice to also get current weather and traffic, which we can do with a GPS.

I'm sure you're ever so pleased that Musicmystery has given you permission to spend your money as you wish, but if you're looking for weather updates and traffic info don't forget you'll also need to purchase the MSNDirect receiver and keep in mind that the traffic info is not available everywhere.

I freak when my phone bill gets as high as $70 a month. I prefer free.

But then, that's just me.
