While I think the majority of this can be laid at the feat of the Republicans and especially Bush at this point, it really no longer matters.

Reagan.

It's Reagan's fault we don't have, coming online *now* a constellation of Space Based Solar Power satellites, beaming free, clean, neverending electricity to Good Hardworking American Families.

seeks,

We've had Socialist policies for several decades. We are a mixed economy---as are all modern industrial economies.

I always thought Socialism was unconstitional.

Sure, but who cares about the Constitution?

I have a better solution.

Round up all the senior executives of AIG, Lehman, Bear Sterns, WaMu, et al., along with all the current members of Congress, the Senate, and of course our good buddy Dubya.

Put them all on the field of a large stadium.

Auction off tickets on eBay. Each seat gets a single-shot rifle with a scope.

Broadcast on Pay-Per-View.

I bet we could take in a cool Trillion.

and worse...how many are willing to vote for either of the two Republicrats (i.e. ObaCain/Bilin or Mcbama/Palden) that are running for office, when there isn't a fundamental difference between the two, from the Presidency on down..when the stark reality is, there isn't a single one of us that HAS TO jump on either bandwagon, regardless of who is in office?

Indeed.

And why aren't the American people in uproar over the fact the Republicans and Democrats effectively blocked 3rd party and independent candidates from the debate?

Because not enough people give a shit, or because too many people are apathetic.

And she hits the nail on the head.
the continued apathy is creating a new aristocracy in the united states. just think about it.

Ever hear about the panic of 1819?

No?

you know, the thing that resulted because the government had to borrow for the war of 1812.

never heard of it?

want to know why?

the government did next to nothing and it fixed itself rapidly.

it ended in 1823. president Monroe did next to nothing...as he would do nothing without amending the constitution (what a good president).

Creating a new aristocracy? It seems to me that the same nameless, faceless people have been running the show for decades now.

While I agree with kittinSol that people are apathetic, I believe a large part of the problem is that most people see the two-party system as the only viable option.

It also seems to me that this is exactly what our faceless, nameless leaders hope to maintain.

I read a good article in the New Statesman once about this subject and this is the truth about most developed countries, the establishment in all of them bearly changes over centuries, even in the US, despite the belief anyone can make it to the top. We believe we live in democracies but we don't, the democratic process is a safety valve but it changes nothing, it just changes the person who runs the executive on behalf of the establishment. The population doesn't get a choice about changing the socio-economic system and if it tried, the troops would be on the street in 24 hours. Western democracy has nothing to do with democracy and never has, it came about as a way of dispersing social unrest, not as a way of giving the population the power to choose how it lives or its destiny. The establishment makes the big decisions.

Yes, but most people don't want to hear this. So it falls on deaf ears for the most part. I guess it's more fun to play the polarization game, for it appeals to the emotions better.

These boards are more about entertainment and self-gratification, then they are about discussing real solutions. This is probably the same reason why more people watch TV than read books.

Perhaps there's also some truth to the theory that people don't really want to know the truth, for then it becomes an admission that they've been bamboozled all their lives. They fell for the big charade. Couldn't see past the illusions. What a blow to the ego that would be!

But naaaaah, I'm just kidding. It's really those damn Republican's fault for all the problems in the US.

on foreclosures,

it would be easier to go along with it if the homes were modest starter homes. No one twisted the arm to buy next up houses. when I was a kid 1200 sq ft was ample. Now 2000 sq feet is minimum!

I don't know what fixes it. But I do think things are interconnected. The $4 gas, the wars on terror, or cost of extensive military; the downsizing, outsourcing of jobs, and the reach of big business to write the laws to its own advantage, the lack of checks and balances and serious accountability. All add to today. One note here- the other countries that are falling, if they did things better- they would not be falling as well.

Missokyst -> RE: How to fix this crisis (10/8/2008 7:48:57 PM)

I don't know of many americans who were convinced we had a choice in the matter. The pres said do it, gave the usual retoric about doing it for the sanctity of the american people, and the established powers made it happen.
If I had a vote in it, I would say screw those financial giants going out for a spa vacation. I think we need to string a few up and let them fly in the wind.
They caused the issue, they reaped the benefits, and they were saved in the end. In the meantime the rest of us are just collateral damage.
Until we hold the men in power accountable for their actions, we the people will continue to bolster their pocketbooks at our expense.

Of course there are all sorts of problems with doing this but at the same time, they just convinced Americans it was a good idea to give $700,000,000,000 to the same executives who stole it in the first place so now is the right time to sell America on a good idea.

I've got a better one. Let's strip them of all their wealth, and we watch them try to survive on minimum wage. Every few weeks, we send someone in to covertly sabatage their car (if they have one) their appliences, or infect them with the flu, or accidentally push them down the stairs, so that they have to go to an ER, sans health insureance. We broadcast all of this as a reality show. If and when they have a nervous breakdown, THEN we shoot 'em. [;)]

SilverMark -> RE: How to fix this crisis (10/9/2008 1:45:49 PM)

Remember one thing folks...We use 70% of the oil produced but only have about 1/3 of the reserves no matter where you drill. It will take (estimated 7 years) to get the first drop to be usable. So is drilling a viable answer now? Should it be done, probably and sooner rather than later but in the interim we had better start looking at how we drive and what we drive.
The whole vicious cycle needs to be slowed down and we are the only ones who can do it. Look at the Metro area of Atlanta, if you live in the city you have a train and busses but, if you live in the suburbs, no access. If I could take a train to my stores I would in a heartbeat but, hell, it isn't even available. Re-building infrastructure and expanding realistic mass transit! In Chicago, you can drive to your local stop, hop on the train and off you go, in New York the subway. Anywhere else we DRIVE CARS....BY OURSELVES! There are so many things we could do this is but one...someone has to build the system(work) someone has to operate the system(work) someone has to sell the tickets(work) jobs, oil, economic stimulus...So many more projects that could do so much for us all! To hell with all the other crap...Americans will work and earn their way if given the chance.

A lot of apathetic people are going to start getting "real interested" in what the hell
is going on, when their worlds start crashing in on them.
Sad it takes that, for people to care.

Missokyst -> RE: How to fix this crisis (10/9/2008 2:31:22 PM)

heh... now now,... you are just trying to get me excited.
Did you hear how they recently cancelled another trip for the executives and staff at a hotel in Carmel, Ca, that was 500 a night?

Just kidding. Right on the money, Kitten. We'll send you a copy of our home game and two dozen bus tokens!!!
