funnelgag -> sleep deprivation? (10/3/2008 12:50:37 PM)

i was considering a caged 24 hour session, with sleep deprivation techniques used at night.

A/anyone ever tried this?  Thoughts/ideas welcomed.  (i have been looking at the use of white noise)

Nope - but i'd be sleeping like a baby in minutes... i use a white noise-maker to sleep :)

CalifChick -> RE: sleep deprivation? (10/3/2008 1:15:50 PM)

Uh yeah... white noise is designed to help filter out noise that keeps people awake.  Good luck with that.

I would NEVER be able to handle that, my body goes into shut down mode and nothing can keep that from happening.  Good Luck though.

You undergo sleep deprivation for a few sessions and the side effects start to kick in, starting with hallucinations and heading on for psychosis.

wouldnt it all depend on the person? i mean for some people 24 hours is rough, but still within thier functioning relam. it isnt until you start pushing that 36 to 48 hour limit that the stupid really kicks in.

Use a white noise generator and some M-80s for the sleep deprivation part , just when your about to nod off KABOOM  !By the looks of your pic are you speaking of sensory   Deprivation with no sleep ?24 hours with no sleep , humm is that with or without a sadist ?If you just want to stay up  with no sleep  just go to Vegas

DesFIP -> RE: sleep deprivation? (10/3/2008 8:17:30 PM)

The older you get, the harder it is to recover and to get back to a good sleep cycle. Make sure you don't have to drive, use knives, or tools the next couple of days. I would say you would need two normal nights sleep to recover from one without.

What's the purpose of this? I can see it in an interrogation scene, but there needs to be a couple of tops taking turns monitoring you if you're caged since if only one, their reflexes and decision making skills will be as poor as yours since they have to stay up also.

You're 43, how do you respond to no sleep? Do you get weepy or nasty or what? And is that reaction consistent with what you hope to achieve?

umakemewanna -> RE: sleep deprivation? (10/3/2008 8:43:18 PM)

Lol if i don't get enough sleep i get really bad migranes and start throwing up about 6 times... be sure you know the affects it can cause on health.
But everyone is different...

Being a visual effects artist 24-36 hours is nothing for me. We kind of train ourselves to go without sleep under intense pressure and mental work load; sometimes it's just not an option because of deadlines. You learn this weird energy management thing. Hell, there are times I just forget to go to sleep for a day or two. My record is six days on a few cat naps. Let me tell you what... world was a different place after being awake that long. So depending on the subject's tolerance 24 may not be enough.

To make it hard for the subject to fall asleep I would suggest adding a decent amount of physical and mental stress, the use of loud discordant music like power noise, some old Einsturzend Neubauten works great or anything that uses a lot of high pitch grinding sounds. Making the subject hold an uncomfortable position for a long period of time, such as standing holding an encyclopedia volume in each hand while keeping the arms strait out to the sides. Keeping them fairly cold, making them do repetitive tasks requiring lots of concentration and so on. Add all those together and you have a recipe for misery.

On the other hand, putting them in a warm, quiet, softly lit room in a comfortable position and keeping them awake, say with a properly applied electrical source, can be even more wicked.

Oh and as mentioned before. Soft white noise makes it easier to fall asleep. However very loud bursts of white noise applied at random intervals so you don't know when to expect it will send someone’s stress level through the roof.

Thanks everyone for the replies (Diphon, your reply especially got me thinking).

I must do some googling and further research.

You are correct on this of course. It's not something I mess with myself.
On occasion I don't believe it to be bad but who knows over longer periods.

PainCompliant -> RE: sleep deprivation? (10/5/2008 4:27:23 PM)

I have witnessed a number of people put through 24 to 48 hours of sleep dep in interrogation / resistance training simulations.

White noise played at about 80 DB is sometimes used by military interrogators to build stress while subjects are being held for interrogation.  At that level it definitely does not encourage sleep.

It typically takes at least 24 hours, more likely 36 hours, of sleep deprivation, for the hallucinations to kick in.  But there is no guarantee it will happen that quickly.  Sleep deprivation is one of the more reliable methods of softening up a source prior to interrogation.  It is not permitted under the Geneva Convention.  Hourly holding cell changes for safety and security is permitted.

A variation of sleep deprivation is to permit the subject to doze off for ten to twenty minutes before waking them up.

No matter the technique, it is unpleasant.  I don't think 24 hours would be psychologically dangerous unless there were some preexisting issues.  Lest anyone question my qualifications, I took an Introduction to Pscyology course my freshman year at college.
