It's really sad that so many people refused to leave the area even with several weeks advanced warning of the storm. It's a reminder that these storms are no joke and people should get out when they can.

what if they have no place to go?? i certainly dont if there were ever any natural disasters in ontario canada...

They put rescuers in danger and also made it a lot harder for clean up crews to get things in order right after the storm. Some people are just selfish and stupid.

If hurricane was bearing down on where I lived, you can bet your ass I'd be heading out of town, and more than likely never coming back. I don't understand why people rebuild and rebuild after hurricanes, but thats just me.

There was even criticism that Galveston acted to slowly in evacuating the island. The storm changed during the week and turned back into Galveston/Houston, it was not several weeks. That being said, I looked at the list of missing, most seem to be located on Bolivar Island and were caught with their pants down. The surge hit them first Friday way before Ike came to town blocking any exits for many, and many were planning to do so, it takes awhile to board and protect a home in just a few days, I noticed from reading various stories most were men staying behind while sending their families ahead of them. There are also many older people listed who were in nursing homes or such, they had no means to leave on their own. Yes, there were some idiots who knew exactly what was coming to them but there was also many trying to get out and were unable to in time. And from all readings, died a very horrible death with their homes being torn down around them and no way to get out.

The other reason people won't evacuate is fear of looters. Unfortunately this has been learned in the past that if you leave your home and other people don't, you can expect to come back to find everything of value stolen. Beyond that, it isn't until the last few hours that you know how strong the storm will be and where exactly it will hit.

Halfshyhalfwild and DesFIP...A former student of mine on the Bolivar Peninsula is in contact and you are both spot on. The surge that trapped most people on Bolivar came hours before Ike arrived. It was deadly fast and deep. It seems that the water carried huge amounts of debris over and into the intercoastal waterway and on to extensive wetlands and swampy areas inland. The searches for people is amid the mountain of debris,cars, dead livestock and the usual gators and snakes. Blessings on the searchers and the survivors. It is truly hellish.

Call me a cold hearted bitch and you won't hurt my feelings. If you are stupid enough to live on a coastal property in the gulf of Mexico, in a location where hurricanes are quite common.........and you are A. dumb enough to stay and build B. dumb enough to not evacuate when a storm is coming Then I don't feel one smidgeon of sympathy for you when your ass gets carried out to sea and eaten by sharks or buried in debris and eaten by gators. I call it the process of natural selection.
