Status: offline 		I know it's going to end up being discussed here, so I might as well start a thread for it....
 
Listening to the debate so far, Obama can't seem to tell the difference between John McCain and George Bush. I know somebody will post that there is no difference. But that kind of crap is going to cost Obama the election. McCain and Bush are different men, men of very different character and very different views, particularly, and significantly, with respect to the use of military force. If Obama doesn't cut the shit and start running against the actual man standing across the stage from him, he's toast.
 
But hey, that's me. Your turn.

Hell, I would enjoy 10 threads on the debate.
 
Obama is kicking McCain's ass, but I admit I am bias.

John McCain, looked in Putins eyes.  John McCain does not understand military force, he was a POW. He saw a picture. He is trying to be the old man, telling Obama what he doesnt understand, like that the economy is stable and we are whiners, but we are talking mostly about war here in this debate.

End of that joke.

Status: offline 		i don't think Obama really linked GWB and McCain much at all in the debate.  i feel Obama really went easy on McCain.

And i agree with NumberSix...McCain came off as the old man telling Obama how to do things. 

imho Obama won, but i had hoped for a bit more spirit.

Anne, I think the next one will be a little bit livelier.
Did you notice at the end, they both got fairly aggressive?

The latest poll that I've seen, and yes it was discussed here, said that 18% are undecided yet.

            Not so, Muse.  Debates can have a powerful impact on the outcome.  It is what it is.  A recurring image, even one particular moment can swing the damn election. 

          I think Obama lost big.

Status: offline 		Well, I'd say they came out about even, point wise...

McCain seemed the typical republican at times: sneering, giving that "creepy smile" that he has become known for, contemptuous of diplomacy, and dismissive of his opponent.

Obama: probably too polite, and should have stayed away from saying, "McCain is right" about ANYTHING. But, still, he mad some great points. I especially liked his mentioning of McCains wanting to eradicate N. Korea, and singing about bombing Iran.

But of the two, Obama looked more presidential, and seemed to be the real "change" candidate here... it was way too easy to see McCain as more of the same failed BS we've been doing the last eight years.

Next up: Biden/ Palin... (if she's still on the ticket, or hasn't found a reason to "opt out" by then.)

Status: offline 		This is my first foray into the numerous political threads taking place here in the forums. Ihave followed many of them and I will not spew my opinions in effort to sway or incite others.

I will however make a prediction, that it is my belief at this time that, we will once again see that the man who garners the majority of the popular vote in november will not be the man who wins the election to be president. I do hope that I am wrong though which ever way it falls.

This debate was very important towards my final decision. I've been leaning towards senator Obama, but always had it in my mind that he was perhaps a lightweight that only won the primary because he was "The Not Hillary" with a ton of money.
 
I saw a very different man today, debating on Senator McCain's best topic, and at worst breaking even. In truth, I saw him as far more Presidential.
 
I was also very interested to hear Senator Obama say that he might have to slow some of his plans because of economic realities. This showed flexibility to my eye. It also addressed one of my major concerns about him, that he would ram his programs down our throat, even if we couldn't pay for them. At the same time, Senator McCain came across as very rigid on that same question. He really never answered it at all, but dodged it by going back, again and again, to the need for spending cuts. Important to be sure, but not the question that was asked.
 
Another important point that came out, something that I have been doing some research on lately, was when Senator McCain pointed out the high tax burden suffered by American business, and Senator Obama responding that looking at these rates without taking into consideration the huge number of lookholes that exist for businesses, was not accurate.
 
So, I wouldn't say this debate changed my mind or made it ... but that wasn't going to happen under any conditions ... and it did play a major part in what will be the final decision.
 
My mind will not be made up until all the debates are over and any additional discovery has been done. I still can't come up with a good reason to close my mind and make a decision when some potentually good information might still be available.

lol.  I'll speak up.  Yes, I made up my mind based on the debate.  I'm an independent.  I have always liked McCain - thought he should have been President when Bush got into office.  He's been stumbling lately.  I'm not thrilled with his choice of veep.  OTOH, what others saw as an older man being condescending I saw as a man with experience who would know what he's doing on the world stage.  When he went through his voting history on past conflicts, I pretty much agreed with everything he did - even on places like Bosnia and Somalia, which I didn't understand at the time.  He went against party lines to do what he thought was right.  I don't see Obama as having the experience to handle world affairs.  McCain reassured me tonight.  I know others on here will disagree. 

I will look forward to the next debates.  The veep one will be especially entertaining, I think - neither of the candidates impress me very much, unfortunately.  I know that the job of the VP is to be the attack dog, so that the Pres can look presidential - but Biden is going to have to watch himself - he has a tricky road ahead debating a female, and a woman who probably will try and give as good as she gets - he was on CNN tonight cutting down McCain and he came across as snide to me. 

Edited to add:  It's amazing how people can watch the same thing and have two opposing opinions!  lol  It's why it's so important to watch the debates rather than listening to the talking heads do their thing afterwards ...
