NuevaVida -> Question about IE and Vista (9/23/2008 10:00:56 AM)

OK so I'm late to the Vista scene and I don't know if this is Vista related or not, but...  Internet Explorer crashes about every 15 minutes!  Is this an incompatability issue with Vista?  It will run, fast and zippy-skippy, and then >POOF< it runs no more.

Is Safari better?  Or any other browser?  Are there IE settings that might remedy this annoying situation?

Any advice is welcome!

Thanks... [:)]

Do you have all of the updates for both Vista and IE?  How about all of the updated drivers for your sound and video cards?

I noticed a few months ago that I was having conflicts with certain drivers and particular web pages while running IE.  I updated all drivers and all software and haven't had those problems.  Results may vary.

I do run Firefox also, and haven't had any issues on my end, so it comes down to personal preference.

Firefox!  I knew I was forgetting a browser.

I'll check for updates, too, I hadn't thought of that.

Thank you both!

I've been using vista for a year now.  No additional problems with IE that I didn't have prior to vista.  In many ways it is garbage for me so I don't use it often.
Firefox seems to be becoming garbage as well since they brought out 3.
Got a good browser let me know.

My personal favorite is Opera.

I used to use Opera all the time, and liked it, it's fast, but I switched to Firefox, that was good for a while, the last update I have been using, and it is so unstable, I am thinking to go back to Opera. The only problem I found with Opera, was it's CPU usage, which was kind of high at times, no good for a small system. I have just downloaded Safari, but have yet to try it.

Firefox, I am being pestered with a pop up to update to latest edition, something I am wary of given the crap I have now. Is it that what was a fast stable and safe browser, is becoming top heavy with all it's new features ?

IE,I never use if I can help it.

Vista bites.
Though my sub runs it. Download the Latest Version of FireFox.

IE is crashing for some reason, unless it has always done this since purchase, you should assume something is causing it to close.  Instead of using a fix by installing another browser like Mozilla, it would be better to find out what is up with your IE.
If you have Vista, IE7 comes pre-installed and the only way to remove and reinstall it is to go to add remove programs and click on the windows components, check mark ONLY IE, and remove, then reboot and go back to re-install the original configuration.

You can also check that the windows files are valid and not replaced by parasites by doing this in your RUN command
sfc /scannow
This will check to be sure all your windows files are legit.

Another thing is to download a decent anti-spyware product.
If you visit majorgeeks.com you can find a good anti-spyware (left column), and scroll down alphabetically to find
Malwarebytes.
Update and do a thorough scan.

Using the other browsers without checking to see if your IE can be repaired is like not knowing there is a burgler hiding in your closet.

It's a brand new install on a new laptop (gleened that info from the other thread).  That is why I recommended the updates and drivers. [;)]

You might also want to verify that the BIOS is up to date and that the MoBo manufacturer supports Vista.

I have a very nice, 4yr old PC running XP Pro in the other room that needed to be rebuilt.  So I took a stab at Vista.  It installed and ran fine but I could not install the video driver.  Turns out the manufacturer does not support Vista on this MoBo, even with the most recent BIOS updates.

Verify with the maker of the laptop that they support Vista and ask for their recommendations for geting IE to stop crashing.  Just cuz it's new and came with Vista doesn't necessarily mean Vista WILL run on it...

And by all means: get a good anti-spyware app!  I love Spy-bot Search and Destroy by Safer Networking.  Free and it kicks ass!

Thank you everyone for all the great advice!  I appreciate it.  I'll try some of the techno fixes and see if that helps.  Thanks again!
