First let me say that ALL puppy mills should be abolished. But I have just found out about the Amish - who many think are so humble, peace loving, industrious and christian- are behind a large amount of the puppy mills here in America. You need only to goggle "Amish puppy mills" and many links pop up. This is going on in many if not all Amish communities, they harvest pups like they do corn and wheat and treat their plant crops better then their dogs. Plants must be fed and watered, must have sunlight and room to grow and the Amish make sure they have all that. The dogs are crowded in to small buildings, kept all their lives in cages, never feel the sun, are bred and bred as fast as possible to turn out the biggest cash "crop" and when they are worn out from breding are destroyed. One Ohio Amish farmer was told to get his dogs vet care or he would be fined $300 a dog. Instead of getting them medical care he shot all 80 of them.  And the Amish see nothing wrong with what they are doing. According to them they are in the right because these are animals not humans and God gives them the right to do with them as they see fit. I can not tell you how this saddens and angers me. Such cruelty, such disregard for a living being! I ask all who are moved by these dogs plight to boycott Amish products and produce. Puppy mills are the main suppliers of pet stores, go into your local pet store and ask where they get their puppies from ask for the breeders they use and check them out. If you find out they are using a possible puppy mill call them out on it, tell them you will boycott them and advise others to do the same.

Thank you for posting this to educate and inform others. Puppy mills are a malignant tumor in a compassionate society. As one who's worked in dog rescue and in particualr labrador retriever rescue for a number of years I'll back up 100% of what you've said.
Along with the Amish, puppy mills are rampant in the Appalachian and bible belt regions of this country. It simply bristles the hair on my back when people claim it their "god given right" to do this. Dogs are kept and bred  in environments that would make a rat cringe; bred for supplying pets but also for cosmetic and medical research uses too. Yes there are major pet chain stores that get many of their dogs from such facilities, but public awareness and pressure is good way to change this practice.

Anyone that believes the Amish are gentle peaceful people, have never talked to some of the kids. I grew up around them and had friends who's families had left the faith.

I've spent alot of time in the homes.

Women are treated like slaves, chattel. The children are also slaves to the farm and/or family business. Child labour laws do not apply. Their horses are treated poorly also. The men see nothing wrong with severely beating wife, child or animal. They are also seriously in-bred with an ever growing problem of health problems because of it.

It is not a good life.

In my area there are Mennonite families who are similar to Amish.  There is a lot of blindness in their community, due to inbreeding.  The biggest issue that many seem to have is their refusal to follow sewage codes.  Something about religious freedom.

We have environmental extremists here, Earth Worshipers, who refuse to use soap, shampoo or deodorant on themselves or on their kids.

Actually, you just never know. I see alot of the kids trucking down the back roads in their buggies jamming out to boom boxes they got on the sly. Maybe they're sneaking laptops in too!

It always did amaze me how people are blind to what happens in puppy mills. I worked for an animal hospital near LAncaster, PA.  I can't tell you how sick and ill bred pups we saw, whose owners were flabbergasted. "But I bought him from the Amish."

Take a closer look at that horse hitched in front of the store, have a look at the bent and worn hooves, the ribs showing, the poor haircoat. To the Amish, and puppy mill breeders in general, animals are nothing more than a paycheck or a labor saving device. I wish people would stop insiting on "pure bred" dogs, no matter the source. I encourage folks to look for a breed specific rescue, if you're so intent on pure blood.

Or you could go to the pound and get a mutt instead of one of these designer "breeds" such as a puggle, chi-poo, schnoodle, goldendoodle, etc. etc. Save yourself $1000.

Blah. We have had more health trouble with missy, our purebred weimeraner we rescued, then we EVER did with Spec, our non-descript hound dog kind of thing.

It's got to be soo much cheaper to get a mutt, and avoid all the inbred issues.  :-/

A childhood friend of mine, of the Beachy clan, told me of the scars her mother and older siblings had on their backs from one. By the time she was of beating age, her father was too old and arthritic.

Another thing, OSHA does not seem to apply to their businesses, or as I said earlier, child labour laws. I know three men that are disfigured from saws in the family sawmill. Each accident happened when they were working there as children.

The girls have very little choice in whom they marry. When they do marry they are basically, the new slave in the house, for her in-laws. Especially pre-children. Most live rather communally with 2 or more homes or even one big house with several additions, for the sons and their wives, on the same farm. So the new girl is at her in-laws command. Very slave-like indeed.

Sure its not the Amish Puppy Killers?

And I think the AKC and most organizations like it are doing more harm to animals than good.  They perpetuate inbred bloodlines that are full of genetic disorders.  Kind of like royalty used to do with people in many places.
