Well we will have to call off the WWIII fears for at least a few more years....

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko said on Friday there was no possibility of a war with the United States.

"Regarding the possibility of war between the United States and Russia, this possibility is ruled out," Yakovenko told reporters in Moscow

Yes, anyone who is interested in international politics would have heard of him.

Since the days of Stalin thru the days of the imbriglio in Georgia.  When have we started trusting Russian assurances?

Your first statement's conclusion provides little comfort, I am afraid that it is way to early to take a wait-and-see attitude about that.

And Russia rightfully doesn't trust the US's. It was the US after all that promised Russia after the fall of the USSR that it wouldn't encroach on its borders. However, what is the USA doing? Yep, you got it, encroaching on the Russia border with missiles in Poland and a radar installation in Czech. The US tried to get NATO to agree to these installations but European NATO countries were against them so the US decided to act alone. From where I'm standing, it is the US that can't be trusted. Hopefully, a democratic President would be more honest and true to their word.

Actually, I blame European governments for being prepared to go along with the US under pressure, to keep the US sweet. Its about time Europe got some backbone and told the US we don't need their regional destabilizing policies.

One can hope that facetiousness is not considered personal policy, here.

There is an issue of us having pointed missiles at their borders since shortly after ww2.......and of course when they did it to us we called it the Cuban Missile Crisis, and we were certain they were going to invade, while our missiles were wholly of virginal thought.

And don't forget that we sent troops to the Czar during the revolution, so we are the onlyist one of the two that has invaded one another.

Makes one wonder how they could doubt our motives when the rest of the world is behind us (uh..........scratch that last sentence)

General Reply -

I think for now we are in a Cold War scenario but there are so many hot spots around the world that can blow at any time that rapid escalation into border fights and then open conflict is very possible.

Why would Russia wish to start a conflict which they cant win, and would lead to mutual destruction ?

An international view might be that while Russia still has reserves of oil, gas, coal and diamonds, there could always arise a 'need' for the U.S to declare war.

While completely against the United States projection of power around the globe ... hell, if I had my way we would pull out of Europe all-together, this statement of your is typically inaccurate and as usual, bitterly partisan.

Poland and Czechoslovakia are not within Russia's borders ... period!

I also trust you are aware of the nature and mission of the system placed there ... pretty much defensive.

I'm not much for trusting the U.S. Government ... I certainly don't ... but the reality is that the Russians are pissy because someone is making an attempt to deny them the ability to lob missiles at someone else, unchecked.

Neither side would be foolish enough to get into a large scale conflict. Sure there may be situations where they test each others nerve, thats about it though.

The rest of Europe does not regard Russia as a benign power. They have recently been flexing their economic power, temporarily cutting off gas supplies to certain countries as a tactic.
My point was that U.S foreign policy is regarded by many as an almost commercial enterprise. Political, idealogical and even humanitarian reasons are aired regarding military actions such as Iraq, but no effective action is ever taken over crises in the likes of Zimbabwe or Darfur, which lack natural resources.

Maybe, but thats not what the OP was about. It is specifically about war between the super powers.

Right, and he is here from the government to help up, the check is in the mail and he'll pull out before he comes.

How do you tell when a diplomat is lying?  His lips move.

Putin is rational.  As Chritianinty grows in Russia,  Russia gains power.

Americans have been brainwashed into thinking American interests ARE  good for the typical  man.  They are not.  The international bankers have taken over America, .Russias own Bolshivick revolution has not been forgotten there.

My thoughts are- the country that is more Christian will win more.  Real Christians do not surrender soviieghnbty to international forces.

If a nuke went off-  the economy would be GREAT.   as corporations would make a ton of money off of supplies.
