One in a long series of foreign policy gaffes. If it doesn't bother you, I'll like to know why.

Have a listen: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/217792.php

So Spain is in Latin America, Who pulled off this engineering feat?

You can almost hear his advisor's beating their heads against the wall during that exchange.

Another senior moment from the senior senator.

Does he know they`re are our NATO allies?

With boots on the ground in Afghanistan?

Not part of Latin America?

The rain in Spain, falls mainly on McCain......

Obviously, he doesn't know Spain is a democracy. Perhaps McCain thinks Zapatero is the same guy as Franco or something  .

He could have thought she was referring to the Gov of the 56th state...

Fucking scary for everyone out there who's aware (and never forgets) that the world encompasses slightly more than the Untied Tastes.

The rain, not Spain, stays mainly in McCain's brain.

Or he was thinking of shoe bombs, shoes being called "zapatos" in Spanish.  Hell if I know.

He'll make a good Republican president because this is normal fair for Republicans. Reagan didn't seem to know where he was himself most of the time so how he was expected to know where a European country was is beyond me.

Bush doesn't have the ability and articulation to recall all that geopgraphy.

McCain, well, he's an old man and its obvious his mind is somewhat feeble so we shouldn't condemn him.

Strange how Democratic presidents know their geography though.

So, to clarify matters for McCain: Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is the lefty prime minister of Spain. The Zapatistas are armed revolutionaries who have declared war on the government of Mexico. Zippy is an irascible non-human character in the children's TV series Rainbow, and Captain Zep was the star of an awesome 1980s British children's sci-fi drama. Franco Zeffirelli is a celebrated Italian film director who I once pretended to know the first thing about in order not to look stupid in a conversation in a restaurant.

Considering that Madrid was one of the three top terrorist attacks in the last seven years, you'd think a republican candidate for president would be familliar with both the government of Spain, and that of the UK, who had their subway bombed.

Those of us who have been attacked by AQ are still a pretty small club... we should do each other the courtesy of at least knowing each other's names.

Hey, anyone else remember the political satire map showing Reagan's view of the world?  In case you don't remember from oh-so-long-ago, take a look here -

http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2006/11/23/38-the-world-according-to-ronald-reagan/

"The map shows an ‘us’ vs. ‘them’ bipolarity, with exaggerated sizes for (non-American) ‘good guys’ such as:
  • Thatcherland (the UK - “a subsidiary of Disneyland”, in this map also including Ireland)
  • Acidrainia (a smallish rendering of Canada - “a wholly-owned US subsidiary”)
  • Grenada (the Carribean island Reagan had invaded to overthrow a socialist regime - “our airport”)
  • El Salvador (the Central American country heavily supported militarily against leftist rebels, adjacent to “our canal” which in actual fact is completely within Panamanian territory)
  • Falklands (the British archipelago off South America which the UK reconquered after an Argentinian invasion in 1983)
  • Our China (i.e. Taiwan, but oversized)
  • Japan Corporation (in the shape of an automobile, at a moment when the Japanese car industry was overtaking the homegrown manufacturers in importance)
  • Our Oil (Saudi Arabia and, one would suspect at that time also Saddam Hussein’s Iraq)
  • Israel (made out to occupy a large area of the Middle East, including Beirut - which it did in the early Eighties)

The ‘bad guys’ are:
  • USSR (”godless communists, liars and spies”)
  • Poland occupies a separate place in the Soviet bloc, as its resistance against the communist system was a precursor to the wave of liberation that swept across Eastern Europe in 1989.
  • Their China (Communist China, by no means friendly with Soviet Russia - but equally ‘evil and godless’)
  • Soviet Colony (Cuba)
  • Muslim fanatics (i.e. Iran)
  • Socialists and pacifists (probably referring to the huge popular protests in Europe against the deployment of Pershing II cruise missiles by NATO) "
