toronto to cali about 5-6 times and back. 200 per return trip...but prices have been rising since.

Per chance have you checked out amtrak they are usually more comfy (take a blanket because they are usually freezing and a good pillow) and most of the time just as cheap. See if you can get a comparable price and see if the trucking company will pay for it that way.

If you have an ipod and have itunes there are plenty of books on tape there.

i did check out Amtrak & Daddy said i should really do that & get some relaxation on the way, so that's what i decided to do...i love the train & have taken them whenever i can...this will be my longest trip on one, however: 30 hours...i do have the iPod, but i don't want to pay for more books to listen to, so i'll just transfer the ones i have on cd to the iPod & get a headset...thanks for the tip about the blanket...with this arthritis kickin mah butt right now, i would have been miserable.....

& the company won't give me the money they would have paid to Greyhound, alas....

Remember to bring enough batteries. If you ask, they may reemburse you the ammount that the bus ticket would have cost.

i did ask that question very first thing in the conversation, Thadius...unfortunately, they aren't getting up off that money unless i actually suffer thru the trip on the Greyhound...when you think about it, it makes perfect sense: how many people will actually take the Greyhound? saves the company hundreds of thousands, undoubtedly....& thanks for the well wishes.....
