I think I would take my chance on the experienced captain. It takes years of command experience and training
before anyone has EARNED the right to captain a ship. It's not a job you can bluff and talk your way into with words, just words! Obviously, the example refers to a place like the North Atlantic and not some lovely lake in the middle of the midwest, for example. Given your example where the iceberg is seen since the ship is seen heading towards it, I would take a chance on the experienced captain's ability determine the right course of action and to give the right commands, reverse the thrust of the ships engines and steer clear of the iceberg. Obviously, it assume that the captain in the example did not have money in the stock market and just wants to kill himself. In that case ... I would rather be at the wheel.
