Have read several, if not many, comments from assorted politicians that claim they are going to save the middle class. Now, i work with a surgeon who is married to another surgeon, who in all seriously thinks that he is "middle class". What monetary numbers do you consider middle class - upper and lower, and are you in it? What defines middle class?

Surgeons may usually be in the "upper middle class" or more likely the lower "upper class." As for monetary numbers I think that anything under $150k is "working class" these days. From $150k to $300k is middle class and more than that is "upper class."

that depends on the zip code. what I mean is $20 buys x amount in Peoria VS NYC 100k may be alot in one local....but not enough to run a household in another locale. oh- factor in too how much the household lives with in its means...

The dollar amount totally depends upon where you live. You can be comfortably middleclass with a combined household income around $100,000.00 where I live. Where I work, double it. Head to a bigger city, keep multiplying.

I'm learning every day. In England, 'middle class' alludes to a culture more than an income, although the global economy is hitting hard at class values over there too (and that' not a bad thing). Here, it's obviously related to monetaries. In France, 'classe moyenne' isn't anything to brag about, and I won't even start addressing the concept of the 'bourgeoisie' for fear of scaring off the post-Lehman Bros crowd.

I define "middle class" as a bullshit term those of the socialist persuasion use to separate hard working folk from their tax dollars. Democrats define "middle class" as anyone not earning enough to pay taxes--so that "upper class" can conveniently become anyone earning enough to pay taxes. I am not part of any "class"--upper, middle, lower, or other. I am an individual. And I do not need saving.

Isn't it strange though, how 'middle class' is defined by money? Well, it seems strange to me anyway.

It seems i remember in school that the middle class was an outgrowth of the feudal system, where a group of people arose that were catering to the wealthy, using the lower class as labour. So this class really does relate to money. You can't break into the lord/lady system, so you made money and became powerful by what you did with it , or who you lent it to. I think it has loosened up now - given that most of the countries that have a middle class don't have a royal system anymore - if ever.
