Here's an interesting story that has nothing to do with political campaigns, but may have some impact in medical research.

Creature Survives Naked in Space

I think this is fascinating. If this creature's ability to repair its own DNA can be learned, imagine the possibilities that await for medical treatments. What do you all think?

An awesome article, sappa.  But do you think PETA will get involved??

Oh man. Extraterrestrial pornography, anyone? I know they're just water bears, but it's a start.

Peta will only bother with it when they can cause obnoxious amounts of drama, preferably ruining someone's waterbear coat while they are at it.

I think it's interesting- I wonder who came up with the idea to send them up there?

Probably one of the very first hardy "seeds" used by the Aliens to help begin making the Earth a fertile, living planet all those millions of years ago.

Thanks thornhappy. I was actually searching for some news bulletin that would tell me what got launched from the cape this evening when I ran across this article. As an aside, I'm still clueless about what was launched. The exhaust plume drifted overhead and rained down very fine powder, which got into my eyes as I was looking up. It stings like a... well, it stings a lot. But I digress.

I wouldn't put it past PETA to try and make an issue out of this. If they do, I don't know how much traction they'll get from the general public given that these tiny creatures seem to be bountiful across the planet. It's not like we're going to run out of them any time soon.

However, since some in PETA may find this kind of study to be morally wrong, perhaps they could be persuaded to take the next trip up to space and hang out for a while to witness just how the little buggers get along? Perhaps if they knew the actual test conditions first-hand they might be in a better position to squawk about things? Of course, they would need to be naked too; much better to evaluate the conditions the buggers have to endure.

;-)

How about we just experiment on them instead?  Please?  Can we?

Either way, this is a pretty awesome article.  The potential for medical and engineering research is mindboggling in the long run.

It is pretty mindboggling, especially when you consider that up to this point it was assumed that any organic being needs to be encased within some protective suit or vessel in order to survive the environment of space.

Yet another idea that I thought was only possible in the realm of science fiction has been proven to be reality.

I think, that you have an incredible gift for understatement.

Wow. This is just amazing. I mean, conventional wisdom is high vacuum+intense high energy radiation+ extreme cold (close to 0K) = death. I mean, look what happened to Woody in "Mission to Mars".

This is just incredible. Yayyyyyy Science! Take that, you creationist cretins! Die! you fucks! (ok, enough humor.)

Not only that, it's gay extraterrestrial porn. They are Bears after all
*rimshot*
Thanks folks, I'll be here all week.

Though seriously, water bears are awesome. I first heard about them on one of those shows, think it was animal planet's most extreme, you know the type. Where they're like hey, check out all the cool shit this thing can do! Was the best survivors episode.

I wonder what kinds of mutations might develop in a few generations?  Will they develop more legs or fewer legs or grow larger or...?

I think I saw this on a movie.  The waterbears return and grow to be ten stories tall and they are PISSED.  Whole cities are destroyed before we appease them with giant pb&j sandwhiches.

More gobbledygook from the media-

1)  Last time I checked, just about every cell has the ability to repair DNA.  There are several repair mechanisms ranging from patching breaks in a hurry (SOS mechanism), to higher fidelity mechanisms which try and maintain the original sequence.

2)  Low earth orbit is easy- the Van Allen belts are still protective at this level.  Medium and high orbits are a bit tougher to deal with in terms of UV.  Any unshielded organic compound is going to fall apart since the bonds absorb UV.  Its why the surface of Mars looks pretty sterile at this point.
