Raechard -> Some Italian's have no sense of humour, TRUE. (9/14/2008 1:54:37 PM)

quote:

An Italian comedienne who said that Pope Benedict XVI would go to Hell and be tormented by homosexual demons is facing a prison term of up to five years.
Addressing a Rome rally in July, Sabrina Guzzanti warmed up with a few gags about Silvio Berlusconi — her favourite target for her biting impressions — before moving on to some unrepeatable jokes about Mara Carfagna, the Equal Opportunities Minister and one-time topless model.

Personally I think people should be free to ridicule the pope.

This prosecution has no chance, it is scare tactics. Should it get that far she could appeal to the European Court of Human Rights and they will send Italy to hell in a handcart. Italy would have to bow to the verdict.

Certainly that "comedienne" has no sense of humor.

Still, that is not reason to lock her up.  Heckle, maybe.

"George Bush is a dumb asshole"...

"Dick Cheney is a tiny dicked pussy"....

In case you had any doubt......

I like what happened to Sinead O'Connor.  She ripped up a picture of the pope onstage and her popularity dropped like a stone. No legal proceedings, just the inevitable consequences of making an ass of yourself.

God bless America..we can say almost anything here.

The Italians are lucky that US and South American Catholics don't riot....burn their embassy.....kill a few vacationing Italians..and start a holy Jihad...sorry I mean crusade.

A reminder, I guess, that the freedom of speech I enjoy in the United States is a rare and precious thing.

Gosh...I could be wrong, but I get the impression that there are some people that just don't like Bush and Cheney. What are they going to do after January,2009 when both guys are off  somewhere and McCain/Palin are in charge. It's gonna be like going "cold turkey" from coke or meth....some dems are going to feel chills, fever, shaking, sweat, trembling and other withhdrawal symptons from the narcotic like state they have worked themselves into over the past eight years. I hope family members and friends are there to be supportive.

I'm not that smart either, and maybe someone can enlighten me..is "tiny dicked pussy" an oxymoron?

Dream away - your freedom consists of little more than what the people in power are willing to give you.

Yeah?  How much time do you figure I would get in France for saying the things I do in here?

You're lucky they did away with the guillotine. That's all I'm sayin'.

Sounds about right.  I'll refer you back to my original comment about my profound gratitude for civil rights, U.S. style.

Unless you are young, black and mentally subnormal, then you can be fried for a murder someone else has commited. Oh sorry, a couple of weeks ago it was a Mexican. Oh sorry, you want to fry a British businessman who has a sackful of independent witnesses who say he was not at the scene of the crime. American civil rights, I've defaecated better.

If you read the article Sabina Guzzanzi hasn't been locked up and its doubtful she ever will. The prosecutor is using a 1929 law which pre-dates Italy being a signatory of the European Convention of Human Rights. This is an atttempt at a vindictive prosecution by religious people so America need not gloat, it has more religious people than any other western country so beware. All of which means, even a successful prosecution in Italy will be over turned by the European court. Its a political pantomine without any substance.

However, when we look at the newspaper making such a big deal of it, it is The Times which is owned by American and ex-Aussie, Rupert Murdoch, who hates the idea of Britain being a apart of Europe and prefers Britain to be an American lacky. Ms. Guzzanzi was on TV here the other day laughing at the idiot prosecutors, she doesn't seem to be taking the threatened prosecution all that serious.

Your freedom consists of little more than choosing what products you want to buy. As long as you are happy with that you'll be fine. You can even try for President and you might get to be President and as long as you don't try to impliment too much change, you'll be fine. One thing is clear from watching American politics, free thinking politicians don't survive the political process if they are being effective. If you don't fit inot a narrow spectrum you are politically assassinated and if you survive that, its probably wise to get measured for a wooden suit. Money controls America, not its citizens. From what I have seen on your views you believe in money being the power broker anyway so you should feel free without being free.

Yeah, pretty much. I've spent a little time in Germany, and I try to balance what my "freedoms" are like in the US vs. what my "freedoms" would be like, were I a citizen of Deutschland, and, quite honestly, I'd take the freedoms guaranteed by the Grundgesetz, AS A WHOLE, over those guaranteed by the US Constitution. I wish I were able to be a cheerleader for the Constitution, but I don't think it the Alpha and Omega of Rights-enumerating Documents. This is not to say that the US Constitution is not one of a handfull of the most powerfully liberating compacts ever written by humans. But, IMO, there is a major flaw in the document. We tend to believe that those things not specifically mentioned/stated/enumerated by the Constitution are reserved to the States, and/or the People. My understanding is that the 4th Amendment should have covered our rights to privacy. It's explicit. However, over time, this Amendment has been rendered moot. There are so many exceptions now, that there is no longer a right to be secure in our homes, papers, effects, persosn, et cetera. If a Pig stops me and demands ID, and I refuse, I can be beaten to a pulp under guise of "resisting arrest" or some such bullshit charge.

I could continue. I'll just say I second Kitten.
