With great confidence that our friend Level is currently muttering a little bit about when the power is going to come back on, here is a story that many missed as all eyes were on Texas.

25 dead, over 100 injured in LA commuter train crash   The company that operates the trains is blaming the whole thing on the engineer.

First order of business...deflect blame from the organization or business and blame the operator or employee negligence and preferrably one that is dead. Culpability becomes a 'dead' issue. The truth doesn't matter as this is to eliminate or at least reduce embarrassing and costly lawsuits.

Exxon/Valdez ring a bell ? Those capitalists had it in court over 20 years trying to shift blame and reduce any damages...and it worked. The award by then was penauts whereas several 1000's of small businesses along almost the entire 600 mile coastline effected...were destroyed.

And we wonder why everyday life is becoming more and more dangerous and unsatisfying... I chalk it up to these behemoth companies never taking responsibility for their cost cutting that ends up killing people. Same with government, (especially over the last eight years) accountability has gone out the window.

Well I am hoping Level, and everyone else effected by
the hurricanes is doing okay.

I heard on the news that the engineer was texting someone
on his cellphone and did not see the red light to stop, and let the other
train proceed.

I don't know if I even want to talk about this. It's bad enough that people can't seem to drive a car while talking on a phone, which does not require looking at it.

What happened to the work ethic ? I don't even have a cellphone and if I get a call at work I expect to hear something really bad.

I was watching Fox yesterday and they kept reporting on this. First they said the driver had been asleep. Then they mentioned a mechanical malfunction, then they admitted that no one really had a clue yet. Now today they have this.....

Williams, who considered Sanchez a “mentor,” received the last text at 4:22 p.m., one minute before the train wreck, according to the ocregister.com report. Williams' claims have not been confirmed.

Hasn't been confirmed, but we might as well throw it out with the rest of the theories, right.

And people wonder why I don't voluntarily watch the news.

I didn't read the article, but have been watching the news.  My first husband worked for the railroad.  There is no way the engineer could be to blame for this!  They have people that monitor switch boards and they organize which train goes on which rail.  Someone had to open the rail for both trains to be on the same rail and for them to run into one another.  Unless things have changed a lot from my railroad hubby days... there is no way the engineer could be to blame.  I don't see how they can pull this one off, but knowing them... they will try.  Either way, the engineer was hired by them or contracted by them and are responsible.  ATRAK used to use employee's from different railroads... they had to do this as a service and required by law, a certain amount of hours per year.  I don't know how this system works, but I heard on the news that some of the guys working that train were basically sub contracted.

Even with power and water outages from Hurricane Ike, I don't consider my everyday life either especially dangerous or unsatisfying. Quite the opposite.

You are quite right but these days are limited and the future is becoming all too clear. Anybody with children that do not go to an Ivy league school and end up in finances or the corporate management will have to actually work somewhere where they either fix something or shine shoes. (Japanese futurist, 1980's)

I see the baby-boomers children earning $50/hr as a journeyman and taking home $20/hr. (60% taxes) because we must protect the incentive for billionaires who make $100's of millions in A YEAR...and pay 15% in taxes. No problem as long as your kids can still afford that 2 bedroom apt. and gas for their mopeds and that billionaire will be able to trade in his blue-collar yacht ($100 million) for a real one...say $300 million. (true story)

Now that's the America we've all come to love.

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw

Yes please, because even though I have to be here at this crappyass job today.......I am quite happy, safe and satisfied. Most people I know are.

Of course I am a "glass half full" kinda person and tend to spend my time around the same.
