daddysliloneds -> checking in after hurricane ike (9/13/2008 6:33:06 AM)

for all of those who have been in the midst of the storm and are safe or know what's going on with others here, please check in...

of course, letting us know the conditions of your area will also be great.

corpus christi started out to be in the direct line of fire, where i am, yet, thankfully for us, but not for others, in turned north; we never got winds over 25 miles per hour, and no rain or after effects as of  yet.  we are, however, under a flood warning until 4pm.

....they sound disorganized down there.

the air got heavy up here.... starting as foggy and cool=but now heating into an uncomfy humidity.

A friend of mine in Houston told me that they were doing evacuation by zip code.  Some residents were told to "shelter in place".  He is one of those, but also had his truck filled with supplies in case he had to leave.  Growing up in Houston, he said it's just a fact of life for him, to be prepared for hurricane season.

Our dear Level is in Houston.......where are ya, darlin'???

NuevaVida -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/13/2008 10:36:57 AM)

I talked to a friend who lives just outside of Houston.  He said the wind was loud and hard all night and they didn't sleep a lot (his dad & sister were at his house) but so far he has only lost his fence, and lost power.  Over 4 million have lost power in Houston, which is probably why we haven't heard from our Dear Level.

Another friend who lives closer to the water evacuated and is doing fine.  She has heard reports that she also lost her fence but wasn't affected by flooding (yet?).

I'm guessing if we don't hear from folks here it's because of lack of electricity.  I do hope everyone's fine!

I'm in a high rise downtown. I'm from south of Houston (Clear Lake and Dickinson if y'all wanna look it up [;)]). Clear Lake was under mandatory evac, but I have some friends who stayed. They say minor damage and power outages. That seems to be the general consensus of down there.

Up here, not so much. There is a TON of damage, but luckily the power is on. The Chase Building is made entirely of glass and shattered, pretty much. Other than that, I'm at my boyfriend's high rise. There is some roof damage and damage to one of the ventilation units, but we're good and safe and unhurt.

I still have not heard from UR2 since Gustav. From what I've read online it sounds as though Ike make have made things even worse her way also.

camille65 -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/13/2008 4:33:12 PM)

R lives just north east of Houston and I've not heard from him yet.

I'm telling myself he just doesn't have power.. and that every thing is fine. Problem is  that I'm not sure I believe myself when I tell myself that.
Sigh.

Its been pouring rain here in Michigan since early morning with no let up yet.

LaTigresse -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/13/2008 5:24:45 PM)

Camille, its been raining here since the night before last. I'm not complaining mind you. I just haven't any ambition to do anything today and I've got tons of stuff to do before the Great Family Invasion that begins next weekend. I've spent the day mostly on my arse. There's always tomorrow......

slaveboyforyou -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/13/2008 5:50:08 PM)

The wind is howling here.  The remnants of it are starting to come into Arkansas.  I am praying the power doesn't get knocked out again.  I was without it for 2 days during Gustav.  The local weather service is saying we will get 40 mph winds and heavy rain all through tonight and tomorrow.

sappatoti -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/13/2008 7:03:07 PM)

At 10AM Eastern Time, family who live in Sugarland TX called in saying they were fine. They said they were on the south side of the storm so they ended up being spared the worst of the winds, but did have numerous trees down with some roofs in the neighborhood showing some damage. They were not affected by any flooding. They had no electricity or landline phones.

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/14/2008 4:07:02 PM)

~fast reply~

Myself and my Darling are doing alright. We just got power restored and nobody in our complex was injured.

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/14/2008 4:08:53 PM)

If he lives just NE of Houston, he got caught in the worst winds of the storm -- We were midtown, right near the Med Center and sheltered-in-place, and only just got power back less than half an hour ago.

Hopefully, he'll be just fine.

I'm glad to hear that everyone is doing well so far!  We're on our second day of torrential rain here in Michigan, not sure if I should blame the hurricane or not.

Vendaval -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/15/2008 2:34:58 AM)

Good to hear from folks checking in, hang tight everyone!

Maya2001 -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/15/2008 3:03:05 AM)

Ike came through Ontario last night after crossing the great lakes and picking up more moisture ...so warnings went out for very heavy rainfall and high winds up to 60 miles per hour and possible flooding in areas, since I was out during the day when the warning went out I hightailed it back home so as not to get caught on the highway when the worse would start...but it did not seem to be as bad as they were calling for ...  I have some items blown around in my yard that I noticed when I let the dogs out this morning. it is dark still but does not appear too bad..but I will leave earlier for work this morning ..just in case there is road debris  or road flooding  that I may have have to deter around

I would imagine there may have been some potential for tornadoes as it went thru Ontario  but if there was I won't hear about till later on

LaTigresse -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/15/2008 4:14:04 AM)

I finally heard from UR2 last night. She was just able to return home and have power after having been displaced by Gustav. It may be a long time before we hear from everyone in Texas.

camille65 -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/15/2008 5:08:39 AM)

He texted me, everyone is okay but its messy and there is no power. I read somewhere that during an emergency its usually easier to get a text through rather than a phone call.
I am so very very relieved.

In Michigan it rained, and rained. The entire weekend was a heavy downpour and things are slightly flooded around me but thankfully it will soak into the ground soon with all this gravel I'm on.

Vendaval -> RE: checking in after hurricane ike (9/15/2008 6:21:08 AM)

I am very glad you heard from him, camille.  Rest easy, all will be well with you both.

He moved further inland to a family member and said he would probably be off line for a bit. I hope he checks in asap...
