Despite the typo (which, in reality, is neither a grammar or spelling error), the concept of wishing for coherence still makes a valid point. To that point, however...no amount of rereading before hitting the send button (unless accompanied by an English textbook) will really change the writer's grasp (or lack thereof) of the language.

The "don;t" was probably a typo but typing english instead of English and multiple uses of i instead of I really crashes and burns the argument that people should type correctly and reread something before hitting send. First post was valid, second post just killed the validity of the first one and contradicted it. Quite ironic.

Plus, the fact is that most people who send those types of e-mails don't bother to read the forum anyway.

Another difference between European and occidental versions of English. The same is the case, for instance, with "colour" vs. "color".

Is it too much to ask that someone who wants me to take them seriously put forth the effort to send a coherent message? It's not like as soon as your fingers hit the keys the words are transmitted, especially in mail. Geesh, don;t hit send until you read it over. First impressions are important. I would rather have a brief, simple personal message than a long tiresome diatribe that just makes me wonder what the heck you're thinking...

You have a point, I agree, there is much laziness in online communication. I try to make sure what I write makes sense, and I try to use punctuation where necessary, even correct spelling as I have learned it the English- English way. I do this, because these past few years I hardly put pen to paper and there, I do not want the usage of my language to slip into laziness. But, what is the difference between words written on paper and words written on a screen, there is no difference. Writing is an art, don't let this art become something poorer.

But what does annoy, is these browsers with their Americanese way of spelling, I opt for English spelling but for whatever reason it still questions my spelling, causing me to doubt and search online for the answer. I say colour, not color, I say centre, not center etc etc etc

If you are using Mac OS X, it is trivial to change your spellchecking dictionary. As long as you are using a Cocoa based browser, it will pick up the system-wide default you select. Unfortunately, Firefox is not such a browser which leaves installing a suitable extension/plug-in as the only reasonable possibility.

I am not versed in the intricacies of a Windows system to be of assistance. If you are running one of the Un*x variants, I think you just need to ensure that you have the proper language dictionary installed in your system's default.

{edited for grammatical correction... go figure}

Certainly not. But an Internet-wide return to proper spelling and grammar begins at the ends of the fingers. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

And snarkiness provides a good 20-30% of the humor in the Internet. The reason for a snarkfest is always the same: the lolz.

While I agree with the OP, I don't mention it much. My typos are legendary. Without a lesson nor using proper techniques I have taught myself to type, or typo whichever the case may be, quite fast.

I have caught myself interpolating the words 'not' and 'now', and thw "W" is not that close to the "T". Maybe it's something wrong with my brain (don't even start on that). Think how that can screw things up -

"You are not crazy [for think that....]"
vs.
"You are now crazy....."

No spell checker can help me. I also catch myself using an O when I mean I. Like "O think" instead of "I think", but that is simply because those keys are right next to each other. I don't know if a spell checker would catch that because O is sometimes used as the word oh. What's more I don't even use a spell checker as I am beyond help.

Sometimes I use incorrect grammar, which I usually correct, but sometimes I just can't think of the proper way to express something. In that case I usually include a disclaimer like "I know it is not proper, but I have to let it stand".

And then there (see, it is not good to begin a sentence with and or but, but it fits, so I let it stand) are those ambiguous statements, those that can be taken in different ways, even given the same context. Like "Damn smart people here". That can mean a number of different things, but I decided to let it stand for the sake of a bit of levity.

I have also read posts, mostly elsewhere, that even though spelled and punctuated properly, were quite unintelligible. The choice and placement of the words was just plain wrong. I doubt a spell checker would help that poster either.

This is not limited to the internet. Years ago I recieved a notice that said "If you fail to appear a statewide warrant will be issued for you arrest". Dropping the "R" off of the word "your" is one of the most common mistakes. I don't think a spell checker would help with that either.

Note that I have already corrected about five typos in this post. I do it on the fly, and usually reread the whole thing before sending it, and still miss a few. Just for fun, I am not going to proof this, I am just going to hit OK and let the chips fall where they may.

T
