The 36-year-old Armstrong told Vanity Fair in an exclusive interview posted on its Web site Tuesday that he was inspired to return after finishing second last month in the Leadville 100, a lung-searing 100-mile mountain bike race through the Colorado Rockies.
"This kind of obscure bike race, totally kick-started my engine," he told the magazine. "I'm going to try and win an eighth Tour de France."

Difficult to see why.
He's got nothing to prove so I suppose it must be the adulation.
Being in the spotlight.

It's not the adulation per se. I imagine that, as with all champions, Lance Armstrong finds the concept of losing to be quite unacceptable.

Champions start out as people who simply refuse to lose.

Personally, I think the idea rocks!

Whew, it only torched his marriage too, the training cycle for the tour, that is.

Damn, that'll be interesting to see.

Good for him.  I think this is a classic case of the guy who cannot retire because competition is in his blood and he cannot sit still.  Plus he has an opportunity here for fund-raising and raising awareness for cancer research.

Well as I understand it the French tried hard to catch him and never could.
Their methods do work 'cos they have caught others since
eg Floyd Landis Jan Ullrich

Cycling is a huge sport here and just everyone accepts you can't compete and finish the tour without drugs.

No drugs, no chance.

Don't get me started on doping and professional sports, it's everywhere, get over it already.

About Lance, whether he doped or not, he's an outstanding athlete, and he's done a lot for the cause of helping the fight against cancer.  He's not without his faults, his famous incident with Simeoni points to the sort of person he is.

It will be interesting to see what team he lands on.  Rumor has him going to Astana, and I just can't see Contador working for him!
