The health and status of Kim Jong Ill is currently unknown. Rumors suggest he suffered a major stroke in August and is paralyzed. Other rumors suggest he is dead. A top US official says it is not known who is currently in charge of that country.

Experts say the recent buildup in the North Korean military may have something to do with Kim's illness. If the leader is incapacitated, the military may be concerned of a coup or civil war and feels a need to show a strong face.

I hope he dies soon.

I'd like to see North Korea collapse and the penninsula reunited.

Be careful of what you wish.

Kim might be (have been?) a madman, a delusional paranoid and megalomaniac, but he at least has (had?) the virtue of being an almost-known devil.

With his passing or incapacity, North Korea's nuclear arsenal and technology passes into the hands of a wholly unknown devil. Not a terribly comforting thought, that.

With him missing a military parade today and the press release a week or so ago about rebuilding that nuclear facility; my bets are on him being out of it completely and the old military types have taken control.

If the peninsula is reunited, it will be a great toll on So. Korea.  There is some fear down there about that.  Quite a lot of fear in fact....

Yes. It'll cost S. Korea probably hundreds of billions of dollars to bring N. Korea out of the Stone Age. A small price to pay for bringing tens of millions of people out from under the yoke of poverty and tyranny.

hello tychtyp,
oh I agree... Perhaps Russia and the USA who started the whole flipping mess, not to mention Japan, might help foot that bill?

well wishes,

You don't think the military regime in N. Korea is going to give up control that easily do you?  If one of the Generals don't take control they may just put one of his son's up as a puppet.

Leave it to Celtic Lord to be a fan of Kim Jong Ill...

The guy was a nutcase. Highly unstable. Yes, it may cause some disruption in the short term, but I'd feel much more secure, as would the world, if someone else were in charge of N. Korea.

Germany went through the same painful reunification process after the wall came down. As I recall, since then, things have been growing by leaps and bounds. Still not there by a long shot, but I think if you were to ask any East Germans how they felt about it, they'd be quite enthusiastic about the change.

Of course not. I'm just hoping that the next person is power is so incompetent the government simply collapses.

That is a hope that I share, however I have a nagging feeling that the hardliners will do something outrageous if or before that happens.

As long as that short term "disruption" does not include a mushroom cloud over Tokyo or some other major city in the world, I can agree with you.

However, yes, at least with Kim we knew who controlled the nukes.  Now, we don't know, and, yes, I would say that is a considerably more dangerous scenario than even Kim.

It that makes me a fan of his, then yes, I am a fan.
