well, i get the rental car today and leave for my long drive to Oklahoma City. here's hoping i don't get lost, have an accident or have other problems along the way. will be driving straight through, only stopping for gas and munchies.

Level -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 3:05:33 AM)

Use mapquest, you shouldn't get lost.

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 3:07:16 AM)

i would get lost with any map program...the maps don't look like the roads...LOL

Level -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 3:12:41 AM)

Know what helped me? Keep in mind what direction the road is going. You'll be mainly going west, so most of your highways will say that. Watch your signs, that makes things much easier. Georgia to OK City will mostly be (it appears) I-20 West, US 78 West, and I-40 West.

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 3:16:11 AM)

will be detouring to avoid Memphis. i don't go into Elvis country. i also hope the rental car i get is comfy since i'll be sleeping in it when i get there.

Thadius -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 4:42:52 AM)

Don't most rental companies put a gps map system in their cars these days? Or have I just been lucky the last couple of times?

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 4:48:28 AM)

i hope they do, but if it costs extra, i'll have to pass on it, this trip is already digging into my sorely strained budget as it is

And if you hit Texas, turn around [8D]

Take it easy- it's a very do-able drive, just make sure you listen to your body if it's telling you it NEEDS sleep.

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 4:53:42 AM)

no time for sleep on the way there. i'll sleep when i arrive...have to be there the next morning

pahunkboy -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 5:02:57 AM)

I got lost in 1972.

I never found myself yet.

lol.

the numbers go DOWN as you go west of south on the interstate.   they go up as you go east or north.

Quivver -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 5:10:16 AM)

Awe, dont fear the drive!  Make it fun.  If your honestly pressed for time get good sleep before you go.
Make sure the munchies are nutritious ones, not just empty fillers.
Bring a camera, you never know what you might see along the road.
As for GPS, some rental units will have it although they are not often the economy cars.
Toss a map in the car just in case you need to avoid an area.
Needless to say, I love road trips ....  grin
Enjoy and good luck!

Well, if you fall asleep at the wheel, you probably won't get there at all [&:]

Sorry, I had the idea that you don't drive much, and I've done a fair amount of long-distance driving, on two wheels and four... Just keep your worst-case scenarios in perspective.

pahunkboy -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 5:20:51 AM)

Hey big Mike,

what is in OKC ??

I hope it goes well.....

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 5:22:03 AM)

i'll have a laptop with me, so i'll have access to Streets & Trips, not to mention online maps, love the google maps since it allows me to drag the route line to make adjustments...i just don't like driving that far alone...not to mention not having additional funds for a motel, once i get there. i'll try to adapt

Make sure you stay hydrated too okay? I understand that you have to drive straight through but if you get too tired please pull over and nap, its dangerous to drive while exhausted especially on unknown roads.

Be safe and I hope you have a nice trip.

urlittleprincess -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 5:25:09 AM)

im sorry to hear cashflow is low right now...will you have funds for food etc?

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: Long drive (9/9/2008 5:26:49 AM)

it's gonna be a round trip drive. will have munchies and a cooler...saves time on fuel stops

Holy cow.  OMG.  I was going to say, I go to the dentist in a few minutes... but this sounds more stressfull.

Remember even a 20 minute nap on the road can help refresh.

I bypass cities when I can too. 2,4,6,8,  indicate a bypass  so i80 would be driect, i280, i480, i680, i880 would all bypass.  where as odd numbers 1,3,5,7,9 means it does not return to the route.

Damn my teeth are falling apart.

Not only that - it costs a fortune for even basic dental care.
